Incident light metering

Does this thing exist? A handlheld incident light meter that
automatically sets the exposure of a DSLR/SLR through a cable
or IR? One would not even have to read it, simply point and press
a button on the light meter and the camera would be set properly.

If not, why hasn't this simple idea already been integrated with
today's electronic filled cameras?

The Minolta IV meter could transmit the info wirelessly to Minoltas top of the line camera. This was the best AF camera of it's time, but pros did not change over due to other factors.

Such a system would be great for photographers who use assistants to meter for them.

All meter readings usually need some interpretion by the photographer. Such a system would not solve this issue, but it would certainly be a welcome feature for us all. I think part of the problem is that the camera & meter companies are not one & the same.

Not exactly, but the Expodisc attatched to the front of the lens gives you an incident reading and a custom white balance as a bonus. Plenty of threads on it to save me going into detail. David

Thanks for the info, that's probably the next best thing, along
with a gray card.
Still falls short of what I'm describing (exposure wise).
