Just got in my Tamron 70-300 di and having problems with it. When I put it on and look through the viewfinder everything is extremely dark. It is almost too dark to see through the viewfinder. It will not autofocus at all. When I put it into manual focus mode, with auto settings it bumps everything up to ridiculus values. ISO of 400, shutter speed of 1/20 outside in full daylight. When I manual set it to like 200 with shutter speed of 1/250 the image could hardly be seen. Am I missing something here? Or just a bad lens?

Thanks for any help

Is this a new or s/h lens?

Take it off again, and re-attach it. Sounds like it's not adjusting the aperture blades. They should be fully open when you mount the lens on the camera.

Here is a comparison of a shot taken with my sony 18-70 and the Tamron moments after eachother. It is very bright outside.

Sony 18-70

Is the lens inserted/mounted properly?

What is your aperture set to? If it's set to something goofy like 20, then I could see your problems not really being a problem.

n/t

Bought lens off Ebay, but seller said it was new with warranty. It looks to be in perfect shape, and everything was still in the packaging.
Hmm... Took it off and the blades seem to be closed. Anything I can do?

Blades close when the lens is off. Get a small screwdriver and move the lever up (you can see it inside the back of the lens)

Make sure the lens is opening and closing apertures ok

Look down the lens as you mount it to the camera. You should see the blades open up.

Yeah, looks like this is the problem. When moving the lever the aperture does not move at all.

I think your best bet is to return it. You could play about with it, and I have fixed a few older lenses, but it probably is not worth the hassle. Sending it back and getting it replaced or refunded is a good strategy
