*** Weekly C & C Thread #40 *** Because Feedback Is Free, Even If the K7 Isn't :)

I prefer the composition of the first one, but the feeling of depth of the second!

Were they taken with different focal lengths? The first looks as if it was taken with a longer lens which has compressed the scene - maybe using a wider angle lens but taking the shot very close to the gate may have helped?

I also wondered whether the first may look better in B&W?

Hope these thoughts are helpful!

I like the light on this one Lawson. I also like the way you are just visible behind your daughter. I assume this is your daughter? I am going to find my young boy who is just now getting ready for school, and give him a big hug. He won't find it strange at all because I often am moved to find him and give a spontaneous hug and let him know how precious he is to me. My older sons are now adults so I know how quickly time passes!

WSSA #181 Pentax Chapter

I've been thinking about this picture off and on all day. I wonder what it would look like if you took a more aggressive approach to the black-and-white conversion. The child's eyes are beautiful, and I think my really pushing the blue channel (if you're doing channel-mixing at all) could really pull those out.

Something like this:

Keitha,

The C+C thread has done pretty good despite the overwhelming number of k-7 threads.

I am impressed. There are still people taking pictures ;)

My only suggestion would be to try to get closer or at least at an angle that hides the tree/brush way back. I think just the yellow/blue would have more impact.

As for the colors being realistic,I don't know, but Wikipedia has a picture with similar colors.

This is the sort of image you look at for its mood, not for its faults. And it's brimming with mood too. Love the monochrome treatment, and the feeling of movement.

I think this is a wonderful and fleeting family moment. I like how you are over her shoulder and she looks deep in thought. Very symbolic. I can only hope my daughters have me over their shoulders as they are contemplating life decisions...

I am gonna find em and hug them now.

Nick I am also not going to be much help on the critical side... this is exactly the kind of shots I bought all my cameras for. And this one is so well done. I would love to have something that beautiful of my wife and daughter.

Love the lighting and the PP... and the framing of the pathway thru the shot is wonderful.

Dad props to you...

I like the composition with the path winding its way through the picture, and the light is nice too. I wonder whether a slightly smaller aperture may have helped? Perhaps a little too blurry at the front of the picture, but I think it would be nice to keep the blur in the distance.

I personally would try not to cut off the path on the right side. For me the beauty of a path thru a shot is that your eye can follow the path thru the photo.

Hi folks, hope you don't mind me posting 2 threads for C&C this week, just got a few I'd like to share :-)

with these two I'd welcome comment on which one do you like better and why,

These where quite rushed shots which I wasn't entirely happy with at the time of shooting but I thought I'd play with the pp-ing anyway. I'm planning to go back here soon and do it better next time.

thanks,

thanks for keeping these C&C threads running keitha, much appreciated :-)

I've spent (more than) my years budget on lenses so I'm not even looking at K7 - well maybe the odd peek I confess but not much honestly ;-)

I'm almost speechless ! We can't even take a pic in broad daylight in the uk, as for here... !!!!

back to the pic, I wonder if a slightly tighter crop would assist, the 'steps' on lhs are a bit distracting and also the pipe at the top ?

I do hope this doesn't descend into toilet humour....

It is my pleasure, although to be fair it's all the contributors who really keep it running, particularly those that step in every week and provide feedback to multiple entrants - and sometimes without submitting anything of their own (I'm not going to list them here, but they know who they are!).

Tom, I actually like the first one better--I love the snappy angle of the gate and the way it acts as a leading line towards the interesting rock formations, and the beautiful grass. I also love that the image is soft in the background, which feels more like seamist or light fog than OOF. The second one is nice as well, but not as majestic to me. Cindy

Thanks for the comments John, Keitha and Nick. Here is the original image plus two others at a larger size. All three were taken within 5 minutes of each other with a K100D Super (in Program mode, I'm embarrassed to admit), with the sun almost overhead. The first one is definitely more saturated than the other two for some reason. In fact it looks a bit under exposed by comparison, although all are unretouched jpegs. The second two show the colours more accurately, although late morning or evening light would intensify the yellows.
This place is the Nambug National Park about three hours drive north of Perth.
