I remeber someone talking about getting a fee code for Capture NX2 with their new D300 purchase but I can't find the thread. I can't use the 60 day trial because my editing computer is not online. (nor will it ever be) Hopefully someone can help me out with this if it's still available.

It occurs to me that it's not really "free" if the only way to get it is for it to come bundled with a camera. Seems to me if it was truely "free", you could just download it from the Nikon site and it wouldn't require a code.

How would this be any different than asking the group for their PS activation code?

I recently bought a D300 and was asking the group if Nikon still offers the promotion that was mentioned in another thread. I don't want anyone's personal code nor was I asking for one. I haven't registered my camera yet so I might still qualify if in fact that offer does exist.

There was a period when D300's were bundled with a copy of Capture NX. That deal expired quite a long time ago. Furthermore, Nikon simply included a key code that required on-line activation.

According to Nikon, you still need an Internet connection to activate the trial version of NX. It's not clear to me whether or not the full (purchased) version of NX can be installed successfully on a computer with no Internet connection. If you are in that situation, I suggest you call Nikon.

If you're phishing in the hope that someone will send you their NX license code, that ain't gonna happen and even asking here could get you tossed off this forum.

You would have received an envelope with the key code in the D300 box if you qualified for that deal.

As mentioned in my previous post, if you purchase a key, it's not clear that you'll be able to install the software on a machine that has no internet connection. I would clarify that with Nikon before buying a code.

AFAIK the free NX with your D300 deal is long gone. The only way that seems possible is to find a (very) old stock D300 that has the bundled copy (or serial #) in the box. It was only free with 'initial' shipments and was version 1.3 IIRC.

Cameta has full copies of NX 2 on everyones favourite(!) auction site for around $120.

I got the "free" version with my d300. Then switched to lightroom and never looked back. I've not even tried nx2. Don't care, don't need it. Not untill nikon makes something that isn't a memory hog like nx.
Don't waste money on nx.

I upgraded from the NX that came with my D300 to NX2 (paid for the upgrade). Well worth it in my opinion and despite what some people say, Capture NX and NX 2 are the ONLY programs that can use all the information raw files contain.

Maybe you should read the responses before posting.

Thank you Wayne (and all) for the information about NX/NX2. I will probably get the Cameta deal so that I can use NX2 offline. My concern was that I'm not able to utilize the 60 day trial to demo it so, your comments and help is greatly appreciated.

I don't know about that one. I have both Lightroom and NX2 and find myself preferring NX2 just about all of the time. Nesting NEFs is very cool. Plus, all of the picture controls act precisely as if they were done by the camera itself. NX2 is in very close harmony with a Nikon DSLR.

I'm running 64bit Vista and I can have as many as 20 NEFs in memory at once and I never even see one hint of a slowdown due to it being a memory hog. Batch processing works fast enough for me.

I guess I'm the opposite: I had LR first, discovered NX2 and never looked back.

I prefer Lightroom to NX2. LR has a quick and better cataloging feature . also when you convert to jpeg or tiff from raw, it is more flexible that NX2. When I load my raw images in LR, I see no loss of image quality. NX2 is not there yet. i've downloaded the trial version of NX2 to different machines. have gone 4 months now with the trial version. not going to spend the extra cash while I have LR. I believe you may be able to download a trial version of LR. check it out and you be the judge.

You got me to thinking about the image quality NX2/LR. I loaded the same image in both and didn't fiddle with settings at all - took only whatever defaults either would offer. Yep, the LR is a better image. Without a doubt - most noteable when looking for ISO type noise. If you choose to turn on the "Defringe" option (NX2 turned on by default) then whatever LCA may be present - it's gone. Yes, you're right about the better image quality.

Now - why in the heck can't Nikon produce a better image than Adobe can?

I use CS3 almost everyday but thought that Nikon would be best at their own raw files. Do I need anything else that CS3 can't do? I've not tried LR because I can't edit as well as in PS (so I'm told) but I have heard it's faster for basic image tasks. Maybe I'm better to stay with what I have.

View NX (It's free and works well)

Capture NX2 (Does the best conversions - period)

(Also, it should be free, so if you search Google and are clever, you might find an extended trial or something. If you use a Mac it's even easier. ;) if that sort of thing appeals to you. If not, pay for it.)

CS PS4 (What else is there?)

That's the raw workflow that I use. IQ is my #1 concern. If I were shooting weddings and processing THOUSANDS of images, I'd probably be using lightroom in place of View NX.
