I can either buy a 1DsMarkii or a 5D mark ii.

I know the 1DsMkII is 5 years old, but I love the feel of it- is there any reason to choose it over the 5D mark ii?

They'll both be about the same price...

I am absolutely torn.

Help please!

Both are great cameras. The 5D MKII is a newer edition and has the latest in gadgetry if I may say so, although the layout of the 1D series is more conducive to on the fly adjustments, which works for photographers with the need to camera mode adjust on the fly. The battery availability for the 1D series is not as slack as the current situation with the latest 5D MKII unit, and costs far less now that it is a discontinued item for the most part. From what I know of it, the images from both are unique and the focusing on the particular 1D series in question is superior to the newer unit.

I have both, my opinion, frankly if you want to know is there any reason to choose it over the 5D2.

No except the AI servo AF mode and weather seal, other than those 2 the 5D2 is clearly superior in terms of usability, operation, AF speed, weight, battery and etc...

...get the 1DsII. Otherwise, get the 5DII.

--I'm a photojournalist, so if it wasn't for the price, I'd choose the 1DsMkII.

More frames per second (a big plus in sports and news photography), a body tough enough to drop on concrete and keep shooting, and superior weather seals.

On the flip side, you get high-def video with the 5DMkII and you can buy TWO for the price of one 1DsMkII.

That's my two cents worth, anyway.

In my experience, there isn't a lot of image quality difference, if any. However, the high ISO noise reduction of the 5DMk2 makes it usable in situations where the 1dsmk2 cannot be used.

Is it possible to expand the AF point into 7 points in one-shot AF mode even below 200mm of the focal length?

Unfortunately, I only have the PDF manual to consult. :-(

I think no, it has an option somewhere under custom function to set auto expand into 7 or 13 af point, but only applies for servo mode or longer than 200mm single af. never really look into it, so I could be wrong.

Aaah bugg@r... I thought that these expansions work all the time :-( Or that the chosen AF point gets some assistance from the surrounding points if the photographer chose so...

5d mk II... IN A HEARTBEAT!

1) warranty
2) LCD
3) ISO
4) resolution POWER!
5) image processor
6) sensor cleaning
7) HD video (you might need this in the future, who knows...)

and more!

ONLY TWO (2) features 1Ds mkII wins IMHO...
1) AF system
2) pro body design
--
I guess so.. However, the only REAL advantage, in my opinion, is ISO, if you shoot a lot in the dark. On sensor cleaning - the 1DSmk2 almost never needs sesor cleaning due to the sealing. (I only had to do it once in the past 18 months).

For me - getting the focus right on in a split second is worth the world on the street.
And the pro body design.. well, maybe its only emotional, but it feels so good.

Hi!

I have just bought the 1ds2 a couple of days ago and I am extremely impressed... I've been using a 40d for 2 years now (very satisfied by it's overall performance) but this one is a different league.

I like very much the AF and the handling of this beast, even if it's a little heavy. The image quality is way better at low ISOs and the metering is better also. The added bonus is the sealing and also I think that the reduced number of sensor pixels (16.7mp) won't outresolve some lenses out there.

Had a hard time also deciding between the two of them, but after reading all the posts about broken/defective/dead 5d2 bodies I decided for this one.

The biggest downside is reselling the gear after a few years... probably I'll be stuck with it for life... but what the heck, I'm loving it.

So if u don't really need all the new gadgets and you can live with a small screed, I would suggest you to buy the older one.

Cheers

Well,
I was considering the same question.

My personnal answer :
First it's quite possible to find a used 1DSII cheaper than a new 5DII.

Second, what are the differences ?
Let's try to built a balanced card :

1. Pro body = weather seal (One point for 1DSII)
2. Bulk weight and size (One point 5DII)
3. Warranty (+1 5D2)
4. IQ (Probably Ex Aequo)
5. AF (+1 1DS2)

6. fps (3.9fps, 78jpeg, 13RAW against 4fps, 32jpeg, 11RAW => Ex Aequo - I shoot only RAW)
7. Price (+1 1DSII - 1900€ against 2300€)

8. Accessories (+1 1DSII - I have an 1DII and the accessories are fully compatible, especially charger and batteries)

9. High ISO - Low Light : DXOMark Highest real ISO for 30dB SN = 1480 for 1DSII against 1815 for 5DII (=> almost Ex Aequo. May be different if you accept lower SN Ration)
10. LiveView (+1 5DII)
11. Video (Sorry, I don't care - Ex Aequo)
12. Monitor (+1 5DII)
13. Handling (+1 1DSII - since I own a 1DII and want to use both)

Bottom line :
1DSII : 5 points
5DII : 4 points
Advantage 1DSII, by a very slight margin.
When things are not clear, I usually choose the cheaper.
One more argument for 1DII.
(Resale value doesn't apply for me : I usually keep all my cameras).

But that only applies to me...

I got the 1ds mark2, but after taking it hiking, decided to return it. I really loved it, but I am a fairly small person who shoots a lot in the woods- the weather seal was attractive, but not having an aching back after 9 miles of hiking is plus two or three points for me.

Thanks for all of the help! Now I'm trying to figure out where to buy the 5dmk2...

Oh really, did you just return from a trip from SATURN.
Canon executives admitted that the 5D2 images are superior to the 1Ds3...
The 5D2 is one of the best digital cameras every mass-produced.
Sorry for my bluntness, but the question and the premise are absurd.

Enough said...

I went through the same process around Christmas. I had sold my 5D to put towards a 5D MKII order that took months to fill. A friend's boyfriend (who was a photographer) was selling his 1Ds MKII as he actually recieved his 5D MKII. I picked it up for much cheaper than the 5D MKII with 3 batteries, with only around 22K shutter count (1Ds MKII is rated for 200,000).

Where did I save a bit more money? I didn't have to upgrade Lightroom or Photoshop, as I only shoot RAW. My RAW files are smaller, so I didn't have consider upgrading my CPU for processing power, but I still expanded my RAID hard drive space.

I've used the 5D MKII since and the LCD is awesome, and boy is it light compared to the 1Ds body. However, AF on the 1Ds is fast. With the extra money saved, I put it towards 2 new lenses. The picture quality out of this camera is still awesome, I can see why it was so expensive when it first was released. I don't like the small LCD on it. I wish it were at least a 2.5" screen. I hate the navigating through the menus (but am used to it now). I do like the shutter sound. Aside from the weight with some fast glass on it, I do like the way it feels in my hands. And lastly, the viewfinder is awesome.

I agonised for ages over the same choice, and ended up going for the 5DII, and am really glad I did. For me, the high ISO, live view, improved interface, battery life, auto ISO, microadjust and new camera warranty sold me. I'd have liked the dual card, sound recording and built in grip, but they didn't seem as important to me. Now that I've had the camera for a while, I'm still really happy with my choice. My major concern was the 5D2 AF. I shoot a lot of gigs in dark places, with artists that move rapidly, and the 5D2 AF has nailed the focus every time.
