I found a deal in craiglist and it is like this.

The camera is Nikon D300 with 16-85 VR. It was bought in April 2008 and has 2 years extended warranty. He is asking for $1600 for this and $2000 if i buy 70-300mmVR lens.

So should i buy it or not? What do you guys think?

You should be aware that Nikon warranties apply to the original purchaser only and are not transferable. Same applies to Nikon Extended Service Contracts.

now that sucks.
I agree. It's one of those stupid decisions that Nikon should fix.

Taking care of customers means protecting the customers investment (i.e. resale value) and honoring the basic notion of the service agreement they entered into (versus abdicating on technicalities).

I bought that combo six months ago for less than that, new. With the D300 being discontinued, I bet you'll be able to pick up that set for much less soon.

Can you provide a link where Nikon said they will discontinue the D300 anytime soon? Didn't think so.

D300, D200
Zooms: Nikon 70-200VR, 28-70VR, 18-200VR
Primes: Nikon 85 1.4, 50 1.4, 35 f/2

You're willing to buy it used with no warranty to save 100 bucks? I
wouldn't.

To save $100!!
New it costs $2200 with the lens.
You need to find out the shutter actuations and then decide to let go or not.

I would ask the guy to buy a transferrable warranty. Nikon ususally don't ask who the owner is as long as you have a proof of purchase.

People buy used D300 on the Bay quite often with no warranty amoung other DSLR's.

Right now D300 sells $1700 new and 16-85 is $600+. That is nearly $2300. He would be saving $700 but no warranty. I would be tempted but that is me as long as shutter count is not high.

I bought that kit new from B&H for $1830 back in November. I doubt it was ever much lower than that though. Unless the extended warranty is transferrable, I would pass for that price. Then again, I don't like to buy used to save a couple hundred dollars on something I will likely use until it dies. If I wanted to constantly upgrade or had a tighter budget, I might feel differently.

The D300 won't be "discontinued" for at least 6 months IMO, assuming it even is discontinued when the D400 comes out (which I doubt). I don't expect the price to drop much with the release of the D400 though.

I agree. Check the shutter count. Visit the seller with a laptop. Take a shot in JPEG, download the image and check the shutter actuation using IExif to view the data.
