I want to get a film body as a back-up to my digital in case i ever need it. I dont have the money for another digial body right now and need a reasonably price film body (one the wife wont shoot me over)

Thanks for any help

Scott

If you have a D30/60, the Elan would be similar in features ... if you have a 1D, and can't afford a 1V, you will find the EOS-3 falls to hand nicely. I have the EOS-3 and 1D ... although the -3 just sits there ...

Buy a Canon Elan 7 or 7E. It's very similar in feel, layout and everything compared to the D60. It has great autofocus, and takes great pictures. I have one to go with my D60 and I also have an EOS-3. I like the Elan about as well as any Film Camera I have ever owned. Best of all, it's very reasonably priced. You can't go wrong with the Elan 7.

SCOTT I don't think you can go wrong with an elan 7 but I don't think the 7e is worth the extra money. I never got mine to work correctly.

Heck, I only have the D60 . . . and my EOS3 just sits there too.
Just don't want to use any more of that there film stuff!

Even cheaper than Elan 7. Great if you want to use infrared film once in a while. Most of the newer EOS bodies fog infrared film (my EOS 3 included) because of their sprocketless advance system. The exception is the current top of the line EOS 1 which has a shield to prevent IR fogging. The only drawbacks to the EOS 630 really are it's older technology and the fact that it has less features than an Elan 7 (no built in flash & no mirror lock for example). I guess it all depends on what you plan to do with it when you do use it.

Just wanted to know if it performs well in low light

I just returned from a one month backpack trip on which I took my old EOS 10 instead of the D60 (couldn't work out the battery/storage for a whole month).

It has been on many adventures in the 13 years I have owned it and performs well despite the increadible beating it takes. It does have a built in flash, mirror lock up, and is one of the only EOS bodies that does not require battery power to keep the shutter open for long exposures (great for star shots). Low light focusing is so-so, better than my D60. It will shoot 5 fps, and has lots of custom functions. It even has an infrared remote.

Just my 2 cents worth.

Despite the fact that the EOS3 might spoil you with it's AF, I'd say get it as a backup, and to augment your D60, it's great for WA if you ever really need it same goes for superfast action shots.

Where are we going?!!?....and what am I doing in this handbasket??!!

SCOTT,

In my opinion it works fine in low light. I just recently upgraded from an a1 to the elan so I could start building my lens collection before getting the digital slr. I haven’t had to manual focus yet even in some pretty dim light. I really don’t see a problem even if you had to do a manual focus once in awhile, not long ago I had to do it every time. There is so much discussion about this I personally don’t thing it really a big deal unless your shooting fast moving objects than you just zone focus.

scott i did the same thing you did and bought the EOS 3. I rarely used it because of the advantages of digital and eventually sold it. Mark

You did say back-up. Well, in case you ever run out of batteries. This one is small enough to fit in a pocket. Plus, will be cheaper now that the M7 is out.
Do what I did...Get a Sinar F2 4x5....You won't regret it...The
Landscape shots are AMAZING!!!!!!!!
