I just got the S2 and a Sigma 17-35 2.8 lens. I am having some serious problems and I am not sure if it is the camera or the lens at fault. I have been getting really blurry shots with my S2 sigma combo.

To test why, I have taken some shots at 1/2000 of a sec to count out camera shake, and the pictures are coming out REALLy REALLY blurry. But not every time. I cannot figrue out what is causing it. The image looks sharp to me in the viewfinder, the focus confirmation circle comes on, but on the computer it is beyond blurry. Much worse that just a little soft, I mean really blurry. Like the camera did not focus on the right subject, but there is NOTHING sharp in the image. And it does not look the same when I deliberately miss focus. It really seams like a sensor problem to me, because it does not seem to be happening with my Nikon lenses. But I have not had this camera long enough to be sure... only since yesterday. The weird thing is that sometimes I do get razor sharp images with this lens. Anyone else seen anything like this. It is not beacuse I am doing something wrong... trust me. It is something with the camera/lens. if you want to see a sample of what is happening I will e-mail it to you. Maybe it is that arrow thing you are talking about below, but I do not know what you mean.

Hi Sean,

I had a similar problem. First I realised that this camera is much more sensible to camerashake. And then the settings for the focussing are quite complicated. The area that will cover the focussing will light up red in your viewer, and when clicking on one of the arrows on the back of the camera it would be changed in another direction. So to prevent this choose the one you would use and then turn it on lock (L) on the back. Hope that this can help. I'm getting more and more razorsharp images now, even at lower shutterspeeds.

With very kind regards,

Dirk

Sean, which sharpening mood are you using? I find the image very soft when you set sharpening to OFF. The STD in camera sharpening gives very sharp image. Hope this helps.

Hi Sean,

I was having the same trouble at first too. The focusing may be set wrong. That was a problem with mine at first. I couldn't remember how to change it to center focus, on the fly. Now that I am aware of how sensative the camera is to any kind of movement, at pretty much most shutter speeds, I am more careful about how still I am holding the camera. I do mostly use an 80-200 2.8, which for me, is pretty heavy to hand hold ALL day. Also the aperture should be set at at least f8 or smaller for better DoF to aid in the focusing.

My shots are now razor sharp with all my lenses...No complaints here!

Just keep shooting, and learning the feel of the camera, you will soon be getting realy nice sharp images too! Also, READ the User's Manual!

Well if it was just minor bluring or is some area of the image was sharp I would think it was just because the camera focused on the wrong thing. But I definitely have it set to center focus (the bracket in the middle is black) But this is a weird kind of bluring. Like a halo around everything in the image, almost like the lens is dirty. Also I have been playing around with it more and it seems that with the Sigma it really really over exposes. The camera is always telling me I need a really slow shutter speed even at 2.8 and 17mm. For example it will suggest 1/90 when I choose 2.8 in A mode, it overexposes. Then when I try to fix the exposure manually it is about 1/500 at 2.8! Could the CPU in the lens be causing this and the bluring because it does not seem to happen when I use my Nikon Lenses. The nikon lenses are always sharp, the Sigma is sharp sometimes and blurry other times seemingly at random. The nikon lenses correctly expose and the Sigma overexposes a lot. Any ideas?

Sean, check the little electrical contact pins between the lens and the camera body mount. They may be dirty or stuck. It sounds like the lens and camera aren't communicating properly

I also have a more difficult time to get really sharp images with the S2. It was much easier with the S1.

F8 should not be the answer for that. That would restrict your creative options quite a bit.

I also locked on center focus and am practizing quite a bit. It is getting better, but I still don't understand why I have such a hard time getting sharp images with the S2.

If somebody could come up with a better explanation, that would be great.

By the way, on the last images I was shooting I already used a monopod shooting at 1/125 or 1/60 sec. Outdoor portraits, easy lighting conditions.

Could it be something else?

Hi Norman,

Funny that we all seem to have this problem. I noticed that the camerashake is playing a very important role and also the quality and sharpness of the lens. I'm also getting more and more sharp images now and also buyed a monopod yesterday (helps a lot), and I also never had problems with that on the S1, I was taking regularly pictures at 1/30 and sometimes even lower (take a few then to enhance the chance of not having shaked) but with the S2 even 1/90 is not enough for having sharp images. I think that it has to do with the very big file size so that we notice much faster that the image is not crisp. I will take some tests with my S1 and S2 to see the differences. I think that with a 300mm I will need at least 1/500 for sharp pictures. In the beginning the focussing area moved to another point because I pressed one of the arrows on the back and didn't pay attention to that, now I have locked that. I'm wondering what other people can find out about thread.
With very kind regards,

Dirk

I have a Sigma 17-35 but not a F2.8? A few points.

1) If you have another lens do you have the same problem? If no then look at the lens.

2) You say when going thu the view finder all is ok. The viewfinder is working thought the lens. So assuming you not super long/short sighed then the camera has focused OK.

3) Have you just got this camera out of the box and it's very hot or cold where you are? It might been mist or something on the CCD?

4) If the LCD display pic looks OK then it's something in the software your using. What I have no idea.

Hope one these helps

I had this problem with my first S2. I also had problem with IBM MD and I returned everything to the store because they had nothing for replacement. Then I got another S2. Since that no problem with sharpness. On first camera I tried several different lenses with the same bad result. Now I'm using 24-85 AFS Nikkor. If I have now unsharp images all of them because of my fault. Camera and lens are very sharp.

I am beginning to suspect more and more that there is something wrong with my camera. It seems to randomly take images that look sharp to me in the viewfinder, but when viewed on my computer they are extremely blurry, but a wird kind of blurry. Like everything has a slight halo around them. I would be willing to e-mail crops of them to anyone if anyone wants to take a guess at what it is that is causing it. At first I suspected my lens but now not sure. It even happens at 1/2000 of a second. However at times I get images that are beyond my belief at how sharp they are. I am going back to my dealer on Saturday to talk to them about it all. I will report back and let you know what happens.

Check for yourself this site which compares the Sigma 17-35 2.8 with a Nikon 18-35...and see the difference,
http://www.pictchallenge.com/Testz2.html
I am not saying this is 100% scientific, but it does show some things.

So, I wouldn´t be surprised if at least with some diafragma settings, the problem is the lens, not the camera.

And let´s not forget, that the weakness of a lens on an S2 will show stronger than on another 6 mp camera.

Wow that is the look I am getting, only even worse, but I think that is because of the 12MP resolution of the S2 showing the problem even worse becuase the blurring effect is being spread over more pixels. So at 100 percent a 12 MP image looks really bad. I am going to return the lens on Saturday and get the Nikon. I should have known to stick with the Nikon lenses. I am convinced it is the lens now :) Thanks for sharing that link.

You said was a serious problem. I have this lens and I works well.I note the compare the Nikon andI suspect your comparing $440 lens with $690 lens and finding that the one that cost more is better! Having said that the differance between these lens is slight.

At the end of the day look at any 17-35mm lens at 17mm @ F2.8 with 100% mag in photoshop your going to see soft images with some blurring

If you feal that this is a major issue you really should look a Nikon 17-35 AFS F2.8 or evan better a prime lens.

All i am say the more you pay the better things will be. I have this lens it works fine thu I dont print many pic 100% bigger the the 12.1MP image.

Like the camera did not focus on the right subject, but there is
NOTHING sharp in the image. And it does not look the same when I
deliberately miss focus. It really seams like a sensor problem to
me, because it does not seem to be happening with my Nikon lenses.
But I have not had this camera long enough to be sure... only since
yesterday. The weird thing is that sometimes I do get razor sharp
images with this lens. Anyone else seen anything like this. It is
not beacuse I am doing something wrong... trust me. It is something
with the camera/lens. if you want to see a sample of what is
happening I will e-mail it to you. Maybe it is that arrow thing you
are talking about below, but I do not know what you mean.

Check for yourself this site which compares the Sigma 17-35 2.8
with a Nikon 18-35...and see the difference,

I am not saying this is 100% scientific, but it does show some things.
So, I wouldn´t be surprised if at least with some diafragma
settings, the problem is the lens, not the camera.
And let´s not forget, that the weakness of a lens on an S2 will
show stronger than on another 6 mp camera.
just wondering on what basis do you say this ?

I just got the S2 and a Sigma 17-35 2.8 lens. I am having some
serious problems and I am not sure if it is the camera or the lens
at fault. I have been getting really blurry shots with my S2 sigma
combo.

To test why, I have taken some shots at 1/2000 of a sec to count
out camera shake, and the pictures are coming out REALLy REALLY
blurry. But not every time. I cannot figrue out what is causing it.
The image looks sharp to me in the viewfinder, the focus
confirmation circle comes on, but on the computer it is beyond
blurry. Much worse that just a little soft, I mean really blurry.

It WAS a serious problem. I was getting much much worse blurring than what was on that web site. This lens had all kinds of problems. It would overexpose quite often, had really bad blur "halos" that were so bad the images were unusable. I mean BAD! If you want to see how bad, just let me know, I can e-mail them to you. Today I exchanged the Sigma for the Nikon 18-35 3.5. Wow, what a difference. Gone are the blur problems, this lens is really sharp! Edge to edge at all zoom ranges. Gone are the overexposures (I think there was something wrong with my Sigma... maybe the CPU?). This is what I was wanting from my S2. I cannot stress how horrible the Sigma images were for me. Definitely something wrong with that lens, I am glad I did not just exchange it for another Sigma though. After testing the Nikon today, I really doubt a properly working Sigma could be this sharp and finally having the exposure work proplerly is nice.

At the end of the day look at any 17-35mm lens at 17mm @ F2.8 with
100% mag in photoshop your going to see soft images with some
blurring

If you feal that this is a major issue you really should look a
Nikon 17-35 AFS F2.8 or evan better a prime lens.

All i am say the more you pay the better things will be. I have
this lens it works fine thu I dont print many pic 100% bigger the
the 12.1MP image.
