Seems like it was a difficult subject, thought it might be something that many could submit photos too but there were not that many entries in the end.

Let me say that there were some truly great images posted, many of them were however not entirely in the lines of what I was after. I blame that on my self and my slightly vague explanation of the contest rules.

Runner ups, in no particular order. Eventual critique is purely my personal view and please don't take offence since I think they are great photos! =)
------------------------------------

-Hot Dog Vendor New York City - Lowell Schechter

A moody photo with a lot of details and gives a insight in the local culture but lacks something engaging, eye contact or a customer in the shot would have made it to be in the top 10.

------------------------------------
-Naked Cowgirl - DezM

She's probably used to be captured on photo but still good contact with the subject and the photo literally oozes of local details and culture, keeps one looking! Well done! Still misses that personal touch.

------------------------------------
  • Gypsy woman cleaning rug - Sosumi
Nice composition, great light, good subject.

------------------------------------
  • I know how to do it! - GeoPal
Good capture of a 'regular' day. Also nice light and fine composition, good contact with the subject.

------------------------------------
-computer - dummy

Talk about every day 'work', creative angle and personal photo. More unique details would have moved the image in to top ten.

------------------------------------
  • Mobile Bakery - LAHJ
Great capture! The work and heat really shows here! Not much giving away where it's taken and that's a pity, would have scored high in that case!

------------------------------------
  • Life out of a bottle - Xavier77
Another strong image, yet of someone else's reality, also hard to place where it's taken.

------------------------------------
  • Just another Day - k5Mitch
Yet another strong image that evokes questions, feels a bit distanced though.

------------------------------------

-Shopping at the Butchers - Suzhou - Dan_Jackie

Great capture of the every day life with lots of local "feeling" thanks to all the details! Same distanced feeling here too though, some eye contact or involvement would have made all the difference in this case.

------------------------------------
  • Reading the daily news - CGS11
Thought the man rideing the IRT was stronger but this was posted after it and gave a good insight in the daily life of others, a closer capture would have made it more personal.

Top 10 to 7 coming up in a moment. This is hard work!!

Sorry once again for the wait. Crazy busy right now, got to get up early tomorrow too so I will finnish this quick. The comments will be short...

Messed up the runner ups, one top 10 ended up there the, Computer by Dummy.

So I put it as 10.

-

9. Saturday Morning - Garryd04

Saturday, still part of the daily round, capturing the moment!

-

8. Elvina24

I can hear the clock ticking and the silent snoring, no clue what's going on but I like it. Nice contrast with the light and dark areas.

-

7. school time - ZorSy

Who can't relate to this, going to school, it felt like going on forever at the time.
Nice colors, what's up with those hats?

-

6. Swinging around - KAikens318

Nice photo, great contact with the object!

-

5. Looking out - Telce

Great composition, nice play with silhouette at the windows, great depth

-

4. Going to School - JTatyosian

Playing with wide angle, capturing both your self and the surroundings of your daily round!

Well done everybody!

Next top 3.

Top three!

3. Worrying news - colombiano

More than a pressing issue right now! Well executed photo!

-

2. Stopping for lunch in Dandong - Peter Waldvogel

Had hard time chosing between this and the winner. Lot's of details, great moment, well done!

Winner - march madness by rernst

It was the first photo submited, thought it was a fairly good start, after loooking at it more as the other entries dropped in it 'grew' on me, it's really a capture of the daily round. Lot's going on, surfing the net, perhaps keeping score of other games? The tv demanding attention but still got time to pet the cat!

Almost looks like a staged scene, perhaps it is, perhaps not, could be either way. Don't know whats going on with the colors but that's secondary. Thanks for sharing the moment. =)

Congrats all, now I got to get some sleep!

Congrats rernst! Well deserved, that was my favourite photo as well.

Would you care to share how you pp'd it? The colours look very interesting and add atmosphere to it.

Well, that's the last entry for me.

Why and who has won is a mystery to me. The Nº1 is the worst photo in my opinion; bad composition, boring subject and washed out colors.

Obviously there was little or no effort put into the photo and for that you get rewarded...

O dear, how sad, never mind ;-)

with the above poster. I personally think that there were many more that could have won. not including mine after realizing the topic...but still. If it were staged, quite frankly it does nothing for me. the #3 choice was far better than #1 if you ask me. But hey, he judged so its his call, congrats to all!

Harri,

Thanks for placing me in #4! I had just purchased my fish eye a few days before and I was out experimenting in between classes. If anybody is curious, that's the "newest" building on the UC Davis campus. It is the Robert Mondavi Institute of Food some thing or other.... wine stuff! It's directly east of the south parking structure.

Please feel free to give me any CC or ask any questions you may have. I enjoyed participating in this contest and can't wait to see what the new challenge is going to be!

Good job everybody who participated.

Yes !
I think this will be my last one as well, seems to be dying out anyway .

Harri manni wrote on my entry:

With my picture it clearly states that it was taken in Hex River Valley, South Africa.

For your information Harri manni South Africa is the most southern country on the African continent. What more do you want, a roadmap or something.

Furthermore, after looking through the 10 best pictures, I think only one ( Peter Waldvogel's - Dandong ) stated where his picture was taken. A lot of them had no information whatsoever.

As far as what pictures were choosen, I keep that to myself - I have made no comments in the past and I have no comments now, this is a subjective matter and entirely up to whoever is hosting.

Simply because you state where the picture was taken, doesn't mean that the picture portrays it. And as you said, a "favorite" is subjective... so why be bitter about it?

My personal favorite was #7.

7. school time - ZorSy

Nice colors, what's up with those hats?

Australia, mate - Sun is much harsher here. Compulsory school uniform - no hat, no play.
Congrats to the winners (and few frontrunners).
cheers

geeze man that's cool if you don't like the picture, which wasn't staged and I added the washed out look to add atmosphere to it b/c i never said it was a great photo...I was actually just messing around and only submitted it b/c at the time that was a pretty good fit for our lifestyle and the topic. not b/c i loved the photo. but no reason to bash it b/c someone else picked it as the winner. you sound a little bitter Bertram, no wonder this forum in dwindling out now.

Well thank you for picking my picture as the winner. I can honestly say I did not think it would win...but nontheless I am happy. I will work on coming up with the next topic.

I'm sorry if you feel that way. By no means my post was meant to be personal and you shouldn't take it as such.

My "attack" was to the host, because I thought these challenges are about to learn something. For example, he stated that one picture didn't mention where it was taken and therefore got a lower rating is completely ridiculous IMO. A good photo is a good photo, no matter if it was taken on the moon.

Anyway, no harm done as you can't win a trip to the Bahama's or something like that ;-)
Happy shooting!

Hi all,

I have had the priviledge of hosting one of these challenges (although by default) and have taken part in many, many more.

I see them for what they are, a chance to share photographs with our peers and perhaps learn something along the way. They are really not to be taken too seriously.

This challenge has hung around for 3 weeks now, perhaps we should draw a line under this one and move on to the next.

Patronising rant over ;-}
