Hi everyone,

I do a lot of wildlife photography, and lately i've been playing more and more with the idea to experiment with motion detection as a trigger for the shutter release. Unfortunately, I haven't really found many products that can do this (for a 50D). The results I get most often are for the ZigView S2, which can detect changes in light in the viewfinder, and then take a photo if the light changes according to the set sensitivity. Does anyone here have any good/bad experiences with using the zigview for this purpose?

What I was actually looking for whn I started, was just a bit of hardware that uses an infrared beam, when the beam is broken a photo is taken. Seems to me to be simple enough, but I can't find for the 50D that will do this. Is there an obvious hurdle that I am overlooking?

So, do any of you know of any motion detection hardware for a 50D, suitable for wildlife photography?

Thanks in advance,

You might have to buy a PowerShot and load CHDK. I've been playing with MD for my A650 with promising results.

Just in case anyone else was looking for something similar, I have found exactly the products I was looking for:
http://www.trailmaster.com/

They sell both active and passive IR systems, along with a whole lot of data monitoring stuff.

Congrats on finding what you are looking for, even if a bit expensive. Looks like it will give very good results. For us on a smaller budget, chdk for power shots is an interesting alternative. Here's a shot of my camera with MD enabled, aimed at a hummingbird feeder. Unfortunately they are not cooperating yet.. no customers.

I have had a bit of luck at the back yard birdbath though. Will post some of my experimental shots later. Cheers.

Thanks for the suggestion, I will look in to it. The price of the TrailMaster units aren't too bad, the TM550 costs $180.

The advantage of using a system such as the TrailMaster is that it allows the IR sensor to be placed at a slightly different location than the camera (there is a 25ft cable between them). This adds a lot of flexibility for placement and composition.

Another big advantage is the capture of nocturnal animals, seeing as the system uses infrared, it can detect animals in the dark as well.

If I do get the TM550, I will attempt to do some birdbath shots too, so I am quite curious to see what you have managed to get.

Good luck with attracting the hummingbird, maybe put a sign out: "hummingbirds welcome"..

I have a A640 (much like yours) and been using CHDK for over two years and I can tell you it can do wonders.
