Hello everyone.

My 5D mark II just arrived a couple of hours ago. Like a little kid on Christmas day I tore the box open gave the battery a quick 15 minute charge, popped my 85mm 1.8 on and then headed outside with my dogs to snap some photos

5D mark II vs. 40D

I only snapped a couple photos outside and I am completely amazed. I maybe psychologically trying to justify spending $2499 (bought online and got $200 cashback from live.com).

First thing I noticed was a depth to my photos that just wasn't present before. My photos aren't as flat and images seem to pop out of the photo.

Second thing I noticed is the LCD was worth the upgrade alone! I can now see if I got the shot or not.

Third of all the background blur is so much more appealing than with the 40D. I'm not going to analyze the science behind it. It just looks better to me.

Forth: The color saturation is amazing. I haven't changed any of the pic style settings in the camera...just took it out of box and snapped some raw photos.

I was somewhat skeptical that I'd see a difference and really wasn't too concerned whether or not I did discern an improvement. I needed a second camera body and just ordered it.

If anyone is on the fence purchasing this camera there may be something to this upgrade!

I am glad you are having fun with your new camera. May the light of a thousand beautiful sunsets fill your sensor. This is a great example of relative satisfaction. It doesn't matter what the stats might say about any camera brand, all that matters is that you love your camera and the IQ. Good looking out.

Oh man! I am so envious.. I sit here looking at the UPS tracking site, following my Camara from Utah to here.. says delivery is tomorrow (UPS shows up at 4 or 5pm)!!
I have a feeling my first shots are going to be night time shots..

Another first impression, These 5D mark II files are huge! Make sure you have a computer with enough memory!

I have to say I agree with your thoughts. I've upgraded to the 5DMKII from a 20D and my first impression from the images was the improvement of the depth of the image as well. I've taken 10's of thousands of shots with the 20D and it was the first thing I noticed from my first time processing the 5D images.

It may be psychology playing tricks on me, but whatever, I'm glad I'm thinking that way instead of "these images kinda suck."

And that LCD...it's a wonder coming from the 20D, so I agree wholeheartedly with that one as well.

Loving the upgrade.....

They tell me I have to type something sensible before I can post. I sure hope this works.

Hi Ken!

Happy to hear that you are really happy with your new camera!

I have mine since 4 weeks - and while the counter reached 2000 - I enjoy it also very much - also coming from the old 5D, I feel that the photos got more details, besides from many other improvemenets...

Have fun!

I used to think my computer (3.4 GHz Quad Core, 4 GB Ram) was pretty snappy at converting RAWs to TIFFs. After getting the 5D2 RAW conversion is once again the sort of boggy experience I used to have with 20D files on my old 2 GHz machine. Ah progress!

Hi,

Would any of you lucky guys like to give a little feedback specifically on auto flash exposure with the 5D 11. To keep things simple, I'm asking about ETTL exposures with a 580 (either) 'on-cam' (bounced if you like) - what is your experience? Do you ever need more than + or - 2/3 of a stop FEC?
Thanks in advance,
Donald

Beat you by a day. FedEx just delivered my 5D Mark II 5 hours ago. Just playing around and getting the menu items the way I want them. I am glad the menu is almost the same as the 50D and all I had to do was duplicate my 50D settings. Now, may wie have some good weather tomorrow?

Which was an upgrade from a 40D, and I just didn't like the 50D shots. - they seemed "noisy" to me. I know it was more in the mind than the science, but I just feel better having and using the 5D MK2 (and my 24-105 is now a better focal length.

More money than sense, but I,m happier now...
