The low light capabilities of the D700 really are helpful as in our recent trip to Istanbul. We had 3 days with rain most of the time. So we did a lot of indoor and evening/night photography. I'd like to share with you some of the faboulous places and situations this amazing city offers.

Thanks for sharing, I love those shots and admire your frank and free communication with the people on those photos.

I also like your web site, its easy to navigate the large nos of pics and still have some exif data available.

You had a nice and light travel-lens setup for your D700. I'm impressed of the shots from the 20mm (a Sigma f1.8?) and the 28-200mm zoom.

Are those shot as raw or jpg?

life is raw

Thanks for sharing your art, and Easter wishes.

I can imagine, you could do a very nice job in nice weather too. This was a different task, and you did excellent with your eye, skills and a good equipment.

One of places I would go one day is Istanbul. Will be hard to surpass what you did.

If you are always telling the truth, you don't have to remember what you said.

Bo,

You've captured the unique flavor of the place. I visited most of these places a few years ago. I wish I had my D3 then. Istanbul is one of the most amazing places in the world to shoot. Question? Which Nikon 28-300 did you use. Was it a Tamaron lens?

All of these are very, very good, I'll second the comment that the inside shot DSC0098 is amazing.

How did you shoot DSC_1238 (multi exposure in camera?) the effect is interesting, and used here in the right way and gives a great sense of movement or change

of one of my favorite cities
very well done

I particularly admire your shots inside the baths ...you must have done some fine finagling with the attendants to allow you to shoot there

the low light abilities of your camera came in handy with many shots, particularly of the Yerebatan Sarayi or Sunken Palace ...your photographs there are outstanding & I do not believe they allow tripods

the street foods available in Istanbul are dazzling & you depicted them beautifully ...my mouth is watering
I did not see my favorite however

the stuffed mussels (Midye Dolmas) available at outdoor stands along the Bosporus are a fabulous Turkish delicacy & almost worth a trip again to the crossroads of Asia & Europe again
I hope you had some while you visited
thanks for sharing these

I find the Export function of Photo Mechanics very handy for creating a flash website.

I actually used the following:

Nikon manual 20mm/2.8 - excellent superlight wide angle travel lens (second hand 180 Euros :-)
24-70 Heavy, but really good

70-200 (sometimes with TC1.4) Also heavy, but really worthwile in certain circumstances

Tamron 28-300 VC. I cannot recomend this lens enough. It has its quirks, but overall it is a very good walkaround lens, and for candids it is much less intimidating than the 2.8's.

I left whatever not needed in the Hotel while out photographing. Sometimes difficult choice.

All raw, then selection and classification in PhotoMechanics and sometimes editing in Capture NX2. No Photoshop.

Many thanks, When we arrived at the Basilica Cistern with our tripods they said NO TRIPODS. Actually they said that for 1000 YTL (about 500 euros) we could take them inside! So reluctantly we left them at the entrance hoping we would still get them when we got back out again. We did!

The shot was taken simply by standing the camera on the floor. 20 secs at F13 with selftimer.

Yes its an in camera multi exposure, 3 exposures, exposure set to +0.3 and taken in rapid succession while walking with the camera at eye level. Multi exposures don't always come out well. I do a lot of them in different situations, but more often than not I throw them away when I get back home. In this case I like it because it adds to the lively confusion of the shopping street.

Well actually we didn't need to. We asked if we could take some pictures inside. They said to come back the next morning at 7 o'clock when there would only be a few people in there. As soon as I got in the camera which was cold immediately got all fogged up and became completely wet. 100% humidity condensing on the camera and lens. Well you wouldn't beleive it, after one shot the 24-70 simply stopped working. No AF and no shutter. I went out, got the 20mm manual focus and a hankerchief to wipe the front element ad managed to get a few shots without looking through the viewfinder which was totally unusable.
Once outside again everything worked fine. Wheew.
Next time I'll try the trick of heating the lenses and camera with a hairdryer!

No I didn't see any stuffed mussels, only fresh mussels with lemon, which I was very tempted to try, but after seeing that they poured water over them from a bucket maybe directly from the Bosphorous I decided not to risk. I did eat a fish sandwich (Balik ekmek). Fantastic.

Great gallery, Bo.
Liked it very much.

Great gallery. Istanbul is really one of the greatest cities to have your camera with. Here is my gallery with the identical D700 with 24-70. I had only couple of hours for shooting and I generally tried the high ISO capabilities (sometimes too much perhaps) of my new D700.

A year ago I did this photo collection at the same place with my D80(oh, how much more I prefer D700).

You are welcome @ http://kusko.zenfolio.com/

there in May 2008 but only had 3 days. I wish we had been able to stay 3 weeks!

The interior shots of the Blue Mosque a difficult to record.

Congratulations. Very well done with some really outstanding captures.

The only critic I could give is that you have a couple of times approx the same picture in the serie.
