Christian,

Very very nice!

How do you like the D3x? Do you see increase in dynamic range from the D3 or earlier model Nikons?

Exactly! (This is beautiful work, BTW, indeed!) Precisely because it has a commercial look, it's very marketable for glamour portraits, or even to high school seniors. And it's not just women who like the look, either!

This certainly isn't what you'd give to someone wanting a traditional portrait, of course. But anytime you can make someone off the street look like they were photographed for a fashion spread, you're making salable images!

That is how you do some high key photography..

How did you meter this, and were you outside with a white background?

Did you drag the shutter?

Great work.

Shot tethered with the computer and assessed the results on-screen, and adjusted the light and exposure until I was happy with it.

It was taken indoors in the studio, where there is some 3x4 meter windows.
Did you drag the shutter?
Nop, just used the daylight and modified it with some reflectors (both black and white).
Great work.
Thanks

I must admit I am not aware of the latest trends in portrait photography, and the second photo might be appropriate in the context of a magazine ad selling some kind cosmetic or skin lotion, but on the whole these two images appear to me to be little more than mug shots with makeup.

This is the problem with posting shots here! Some would not recognise good work if they tripped over it!

Maybe you should just have posted the usual cr* , hackneyed & cliche'd portraits that everyone does so they COULD get it - after all, that's what they do - think only in the box!

The shots are super and I'm sure the models would be delighted with the shots as portraits. Very commercial!

Some of these guys on here will never be photographers as long as they have a hole in their a*

Perhaps I did the original poster a disservice by not being specific enough in my comments.

If the intent of these portraits is to render the subjects as soulless mannequins, or as generic (but obviously attractive) females, then they succeed on that level (except the first one needs to have more of the shoulders cropped away because the model's perfectly vertical head is unnaturally positioned with respect to the angled shoulder line). If this is what the advertising world demands, and it sells, then so be it.

If, on the other hand, these portraits are meant to show these two women as individuals, with personalities of their own, then they fall flat on their face, so to speak.

Perhaps if the OP had posted a cliche B&W barn shot you would be more impressed?

Let me re-clarify my original statement so I'm not doing a disservice...

Lame B&W barn shots are so cliche you should burn your camera and venture to the grave of Ansel Adams and beg for forgiveness...

It's perfectly legitimate to disagree with my opinion, but personal attacks do not constitute an effective rebuttal. It would be more informative and helpful if you would elucidate what qualities the two photos possess that make them compelling images.
