Hello there,

Any comments you may have regarding composition, exposure, focus, etc. are more than welcomed.

For some reason I've ALWAYS had problems focusing on the turtle's eye. Perhaps the layer of water impedes this.

Thanks for looking and may you have good day,

Jacobo

You got some blown highlights. There's a distinct lack of detail and sharpness, possibly because 1/40 at 300mm isn't enough to handhold, even with a VR lens it's not much. It also seems that you were shooting wide open or close to it. Budget lenses tend to be weak wide open at the extreme zoom range.
The pic is a bit low on contrast as well.

I'd retry the shot, possible from a different angle.

Many thanks for your comments. At 300mm the 70-300VR's max aperture is 5.6; the shot was made at f9.0. At the latter as well as at f10 my lens is very sharp at 300mm (IMO). Your statement regarding sharpness and detail is a problem I've always encountered with the "wet" turtle; can't explain it.

Blown highlights, yes; low in contrast??

Thanks a lot for you time and comments,

Jacobo

I don't see that the contrast is low. If you installed ViewNX you can load this image and find out which focus area of the three was utilized. I would be surprised if it is the one near the eye.

The 70-300 is capable of more sharpness than this. I also agree that it's a bit overexposed and shutter speed might be a problem. Try raising the iso to get faster shutter speed and cut the exposure down a touch.

How far away from the turtle were you?

Hi,

I would say about 5 feet; the minimum focus distance for the 70-300 at 300.

I think I would step back a little more.

Maybe the wrong forum but I just had to add some contrast to the picture.

Hi Peter,

CC means "comment and critique."

That was great! No disrespect intended : )

To me the water or maybe the turtles neck looks to be the most sharp. I agree with bumping up the ISO to get the faster shutter. If you are shooting at 300mm, try to keep at least that shutter speed...
