Is HVL-F42am and F58am compatible to Maxxum 7 / 9?

Well at least I dragged my Dynax 9 out of its storage, put the HVL 58 on it, and fired a few shots. Lacking the LCD screen on the back and lacking film, what i can say at this point in time that indeed
  • the flash fired and showed green LED confirming good exposure
  • the flash turned to HSS mode when choosing high shutter speeds
  • the combo feels and looks (!) just great
  • the pop-up flash is blocked with the HVL 58 on top ;-(
No pictures from the Dynax 9 to proof the whole thing works, but here is the combo shot with the A700 and built-in flash (obviously - no bounce):

At least in my experience.

I tried a while back to get the F42 to work wirelessly with the 9 but gave up in the end and went back to using my older (Minolta) 5400. Would be interesting if someone with better knowledge of the Sony/Minolta flash system could confirm if wireless functionality is lost with the latest Sony flashes and film Minoltas.

Lots of good information here.. the HVL-58am is a great flash
