Yellow nosed Albatross at Sea

G'day again Richard,

Great work as usual but especially so under tricky swell conditions!

I presume you're still with your K20d?... and I might be mistaken but the water colour seems different to the K10... or do you use different post processing now?

Excellent work Richard! Those are difficult circumstances in which to
shoot superb photographs mate!
I can't imagine going to sea in 6 meter waves!!
Hi Leo, I have a ‘golden rule’ I do not go out of the harbour in anything over 3 metres. But I go out in the dark before sunup and lots of times the sea has a lot more ‘on it’ come daylight and when I’m well offshore, by then I have used a lot of fuel and am committed.
Thank you for looking
Richard

Yes great shots!
Certainly fun and inspiring to have that beautiful bird coming so close!

No you are not mistaken, I have had quite a few colour dramas with the K20D which I have still to get on top of. The water colour changes all of the time so I have no real standard for it. Sometimes when the sky is blue and the water is clear the water takes on such an over saturation of blue that it appears unreal.
Best regards
Richard

ahoy there Richard!!

These post of yours, get me hoppin like no other on the Pentax DSLR talk forum!!!

The tale of the ancient mariner, the Albatross, hmm lives out at sea a fitting companion for you and luckily for us viewers your K10D, Get that thing Digi Cam assalty as you need to, if it captures these kind of shots!!! Well pass the hat around for a new one if it ever does a kamikazzee on you, As for your 55-300, I’d probably slide cut out piece of a budget childrens raincoat over it and use a O ring to seal it at the mount, leave enough slack in between to allow for zooming and have extend up around the hood, a 2009er kind WS for the masses!!

Now lets have a look see at these shots you netted...
  1. 1 Embarrased to say it but I don’t think I’ve ever seen a real foto of an albatros floating on the waters surface like this, they are always flying against a blue sky , so me o my I did’nt realize they had the marking on the beak catepillar orange fading to dayglo pink on a ebony beak, the slit under the eyes signals to me something about the huge yaw of the jaws, that would be possible. You should be proud of this shot!! the texture in the burnt umber feathers along the back fading to black at right, grows ever darker set against the white feathers at the bottom right, the micro wave cresting along the base of the birds body leads the eye on a playful little journey through to the white reflection of the birds neck, the whole set off by the light play on the rich navy blue waves, but the attention is always pulled back once again to the eye the slit the beak.
What distance that eye has encompassed, something we humans might recognize as a “something there”, but never experience unless we could somehow meet that terrifying challenge to set our hearts free.
  1. 2 A cockemainy landing at sea worthy of any navy aircraft land on a carrier at sea it ain’t pretty, but its effective, and that d@mn bird don’t care what we humans might think about poise and grace, no the bird just don’t give a hoot it’s just thinkin “I see a fish and its miiiiiine!!!
  1. 3 Now my whole desk is sloping topsyturvey trying stop the coffee cup from sliding off the edge, running out to get a mop, batten down the hatches matey!!!, But the abatross just thinks, hmm good day to go fishin!!!
  1. 4 A Lesson in aerodynamics, and geometry three tones a chord of color line shape, the bird, if he adjusted his wings a inch he’d be flying out of my monitor, DUCK!!!!
  1. 5 Fun PP the BW give mental space to really se whats happening with the form of the bird the ruffled feathers I note now caused by highwinds, stand in high relief, The color along the beak a little joke to add humour, the secret laugh echoed by the exquisite splash of water glass like spewing upwards from the rollicking surface of water a sloshing mirror, defined by dark and light tones...
Thanks FOr ThE WAvVvVVvY Look SEA!!

Regards

I think I’m gonna SICKCICKCIK

perspective.
For me photography is a tool for capturing these insights, for reflection and
sharing.

Hi Brent, This Pentax gear seems to be able to handle it. I think the only trouble I have had was a sticky shutter button but after I cleaned the blood and guts (from my bait) out of it with some Isopro it was okay.
Many thanks again for your very comprehensive reply.
Kind regards
Richard

Those are excellent. I haven't figured out yet how to take pictures and control the sailboat at the same time yet. I am giving some thought to installing the tiller tamer this year.
