Major Upgrade from Canon?

Correct me if I am wrong here... but isn't the upgrade to minolta is simply a firmware update, which canon offer them for free? where as minolta is charging $49 for the firmware upgrade....

so your question is why does canon not charge $49 for the firmware update rather than giving it for free???

Once again, the article was very short, and I interpret the update as being just a mere firmware update... once again please correct me if I am wrong..

You are defnitely right ! But it seems to be a little more than a mere firmware upgrade. For its G2, canon only posted "parallel" improvements, some of which don't even work on all G2, and sometimes going as far as destroying some electric parts in the firmware of the camera...

Anyway, I'm sure that one of these days, some of our camera's big issues will find themselves corrected.

Happy snapping !

Well, I thought that the firmware upgrade being offered by Minolta would bring an original Dimage 7 up an equivalent feature set of the new 7i.

Canon has not done this, possibly because they have not released an updated G2.

Myself, I think that Canon's view is one of "We already have your money, why should we give you anything else?"

Don't hold your breath waiting for Canon to release anything but maintenance patches. It'd be nice if they did try to tweak the AF before the camera is End-Of-Life'd.

There goes that damn pig past my window again....

I agree with Russelc, the upgrade Minolta is offering is like making a g-1 into a (3mp) G-2. Would that make you excited? I didn't think so.

Canon has offered several firmware upgrades free. Have you noticed that Sony has NEVER offered (nor will ever offer) user installed firmware upgrades. It has required F505 and F707 users to send in their cameras to a service center for firmware fixes. And these fixes were for near catostrophic problems with color rendition and flash use, not several minor improvements or fixes. If you buy a Sony you will, in all likelyhood, never get an improvement to your camera until you purchase the next model.

As for the focus issues, the contrast based AF systems of consumer digicams cannot handle focusing on moving objects. None of them can do this as there simply isn't enough sensor sensitivity nor enough computing power to be fast enough. One has to go to a dSLR like the 1D for state of the art fast, reliable focusing. Otherwise shoot at Pan focus mode (like a P&S with no zoom) or learn to prefocus:

or go back to the phase focusing systems of film.
