You are absolutely right!

Just a little bowl of beach sand, taken from a large pile of sand when I was paving stones in my garden.

Reverse mounted a Nikkor 50mm 1.8 AIS lens on a PB-6 bellows, positioned the lens just a few centimetres from the sand, shined a LED flashlight on the sand, 1s exposure time. Shot with a Nikon D200.
