What Olympus camera is going to be more important...

I've been a bit distracted... I'll get a reminder out to everyone and we'll do our best to get something out in the next week.

Thanks for your interest, and if you have any pressing questions, please fire away and I'll do my best to answer.

Cheers

Brian

Basically, entry level DSLRs are expected to sell most, even more
than m4/3 in the next couple of years. I will not be surprised if the
E-450 outsells the fantastic E-620,
Yes, but if people think well they realize that the E-620 is a better
choice.
Glass is really important.
-- I would concur that in the short term the E-620 will be the 4/3rds camera of choice. Given the very little price difference over now E450 and E620 model I can only see the 400 series being popular at closeout priceing. However I think the E620 with its swivel screen implimentation and quality glass should be a very very serious threat to the rest of the consumer DSLR market.

I think the G1 will continue to be very sucessful in the m4/3 and hope for the sake of 4/3 format that E620 and G1 complement each other. The G1 will continue to have the better viewfinder and manual focus with legacy glass while E620 has the edge with Oly glass. Once the new m4/3 models are readily available I see the price of 4/3 to m4/3 adapter being dropped sharply so that quality 4/3 will be used more on m4/3 systems and the tide will change to m4/3 advantage.

I believe the most influential products will be the mini m4/3 rangefinder products from both Oly and Pany with the addition not only of very popular shape but HD video capability which comes with the m4/3 mount. A lot depends on whether or not Oly will also use high def EVF and reversible screen and Pany incorporates in body IS in their model and what m4/3 lenses are produced to meet demands.
The E-30 is a rather limited upgrade path for existing users, but it
fills a necessary position in the lineup.
The flagship slot is important
The E-30 is a surprise, lot's of people buying it. And the price is
going to drop, the E-30 is going to be a very good value.
--I am surprised that Oly even came out with the E30 as the only advantage I can see over the E620 is a much better glass prism ovf. I can't see why they did not just continue with the E3 weatherproof metal body at same cost and added the improvements.
The m4/3 belongs to a new line of products. If it turns out to
resemble the mockup it will be a fasion item and as such its success
will depend very much on PR and pricing. In fact it's impossible to
predict what the market will make of it and how it will be positioned
eventually. It may end up anywhere between a photographer's second or
third camera which will hardly sell and the most popular gadget of
2010, selling in hundreds of thousands.
--At the rumored high price for the Oly m4/3 mockup I can't see it making a significant dent competing against the very popular LX3 and G10 quality cameras although it will have its place using fast primes as a second camera or for backpackers. This will become even more apparent when the rangefinder EVF models appear at the end of the year as a high def EVF is the main reason for their likely success coupled with swivel screen for HD video use.
Right now the other manufactures appear to be scrambling to catch up to Oly and Pany 4/3 and m4/3 developments and most of their latest models appear to be compromises at best in implimentation or lack thereof of fully reversible screens and implimentation of HD video potential ,even if the image IQ is there. The very fact that they are trying to put these features make these features a "must" in many future cameras and only emphasises the lead Oly and Pany have at present.

Isn´t it a great little camera? Although my E-3 is good too for manual focussing, thanks to the big viewfinder, the G1 is better.
And you are right, you can still find lots of good lenses for not to much.
In the legacy lens thread on this page I did post some examples.
Are you goiing to buy a G one or wait for Olympus?
Greetings, Michiel

Isn't it a great little camera?
It's undoubtly the best there is at the moment.

I guess the big problem is the false extra DOF on the OVF and you just can't come around it, no matter how big the OVF is...
Are you goiing to buy a G one or wait for Olympus?
I hadn't the money available and when Panasonic announced the G1, they almost announced they'd be working on the G1H. Those 2 factors put me on hold immediately!

Then came factor 3: I miss IS too much, even though I get much more keepers, I'm still trading OOF for motion blur on indoor pictures.

Now BIG factor 4 is taking me even further away from the G1H: the price on the 14-140! I know it's unique and probably worth the money but I just can't get up there and still keep a crippled use of legacy because of lack of IS on low light...

If they sell body only, it's not completely out of the picture, but I'm waiting right now...

I can't go without sensor based IS and good EVF. It will probably take until December if rumors prove correct. I will take 720p video anytime...I have just the right lenses for that (legacy silent focusing continuous aperture hexanons, of course).
I just hope Olympus delivers. A swivel in the package would be very nice too...

1) The E620
The Camera for the Masses. It will sell like Hot Chocolate.
Here I agree.
2) Olympuy "E4"
The next Pro hast to be the big Leap forward for Olympus - not only
as Camera for future Models and Developments, but also to get-in the
Pro, Advance Amateurs and Outdoor Photographers as well as to prove
that there is a reason for the Super High Grade Lenses.
Here I put the E-30 and the future E-4 on the same level of importance.
3) m4/3 Rangefinder Like
Yes, the m4/3 has to be a traditional Rangefinder-Like-Design with
good standard zooms and great primes.
Yes, I think the second m4/3, a pro m/43 camera, to be launched in December, will be more important for Olympus and maybe sell better than the consumer m4/3

how soon opinions can change. Half a year ago people were smearing
about EVF's and now people are tending towards EVF as the way to go.
Five years old KonicaMinolta A2 which was released little before first entry-level DSLRs has nearly Panasonic G1 level EFV.

But money talked, BS walked and suddenly everybody had to have DSLR giving antique mirror new renaissance which in practise killed development of real features in fixed lens digicams because of price competition from simplified DSLRs with their cheap kit optics.
