Hi - my D30 is sick and I did get several posts after decribing the problem that I should send it to Canon. Since this was a refurbished model I got the two year Mack warranty. Has anybody sent their digital slr into them? I am looking for feedback to see if I should bite the bullet and instead send it to Canon. Thanks

My original post describing the problem:

Today my D30 started out ok, but I think it is sick now and I would appreciate any feedback or advice.
  • I noticed when reviewing my shots that the last 10 or so were neon in their exposure. My crane was bright pink and blue - it is hard to even describe, but it was florescent.
  • I decided to take a few more shots to see how they would come out and the camera wouldn't take the shot. Through the viewfinder the bars under the exposure level kept moving in from outside to inside - never had that happen before. I switched gig card and when I take the shot the shutter shuts and goes black and then won't open up. When I turn off the camera the LCD monitor on top of the camera - the battery light, the picture counter and the bar under the exposure level stays on - In order to get a blank screen I have to take out the battery and reinsert the battery. When I try to take a new picture - i just notice that when I take press the shutter release button half way the exposure bar in the view finder the outside boxes light up, then the next bars to the middle until the center box lights up and then goes dark - every time I repress it happens again.

I think I would certainly try the Mack warranty first if the alternative is to pay for Canon work. I was under the assumption that if Mack can't fix it, they must send it to Canon anyway.

Many of us are anxious to hear from someone with real results from Mack. Most of us have just heard rumors about their warranty. Please let the group know what you decide and how it turns out.

Thanks,
Jim Dawson

I will be happy to post how Mack does - I am keeping my fingers crossed that they will do a great job.

Although I don't have any feedback on Mack yet (in fact, I don't even have my D60 yet...), I pre-ordered a D60 and did buy the optional Mack extended warranty. The reason is that I have never owned a camcorder for more than one year which didn't need some sort of repair, so I always buy the extended warranties with my camcorders, and Circuit City has always lost money the deal :-). I figure the D60 is glorified camcorder (please....no flames....), so I don't expect it to stay out of the shop more than one or two years at a time.

You might ask yourself, "what the hell is this guy doing to his cameras to bust them up every twelve months?" To be honest I don't know. I tend to grab them and swing them around a bit rougher than I should. But I don't drop them or take them swimming.

**** - could you paste the response or update that link. Now I am terrified to send the camera to Mack and was hoping to read more about them.

Thanks
Although I suspect Mack must have some satisfied customers the
experience one unlucky soul related to consumer advocate David
Horowitz and Mack's response to Mr. Horowitz certainly leaves me to
wonder about their integrity.

I also have a Mack warrenty on my D30...I hope I never have to use it. At photo.net there are a few unhappy Mack customers...but I suspect that is normal...I'm sure there are people who drop their cameras and they try to get service on them and are refused...another thing is complainers are more likely to complain than are satisfied customers are likely to write a good report. My feelings that if Mack were not somewhat reliable the major firms like B&H and at the time Camera World would not use them because of the heat their customers would apply to them...I hope I'm right if I ever need the service.

Best of Luck!!!!

I hope you are, too!

Seriously--extended "warranties" are high profit items for dealers (even from a reputable source).

In this case, I don't need to debate the quality of Mack's service -- the tenor of their response to Mr. Horowitz alone gives me pause about their integrity.
