Yayyy! I didn't get stung, despite getting quite close. These are the best insect macros I've taken I think. At least they were the most fun. : ) I left all of them uncropped so there's some vignetting. Shot at ISO 400 plus with flash, and it seemed to work like a charm. I think the flash reduces noise that ruins many high ISO shots.

The key to getting close is to remain totally calm and relaxed. Apparently they can sense adrenelin in the blood. What fun this was. : ) Fun until I get stung I suppose.

I don't think I have the nerve to shoot macros of those bad boys.
My favorite is #1.......minus the vignetting of course.
You're right, the noise really isn't that much of a problem.
Great shots!!

It's amazing how close you can really get to these guys. I think if I'd get just my hand that close, they might feel more threatened, but maybe a camera looks like a big rock to them that has not intent in harming them.

As for the ISO 400, I was pretty impressed with the low noise. Next time though I'll try ISO 200, and reflect some light on the area instead. ISO200 should be perfectly uasable in that lighting.

I think there is not much risk..they are not so aggressive...when i took this, there were about 12 of them buzzing around me, trying to reach the piece of chicken wing. some even landed on my hand while i was trying to focus but did not sting.

what lens did you use? was it a teleconverter? I used closeup lens for mine.

Nice shot Daniella. I guess there isn't too much risk as long as you remain calm and don;t jerk your hand. I did that a few times because I got bit by a mosquito. Luckily I wasn't shooting right then. : )

Thanks Veronica. I was really pleased with the results, but I cut my photoshoot a bit early because 1 wasp became over aggressive and chased me a bit when I realized it wasn't letting up. ; ) I'll be back tommorow though. : )

I used a 50mm SLR lens and flipped it. It magnifies quite well, especially this one. I found it in a dumpster, and attach it with 2 rubberbands to the end of the lens tube adaptor on my C3000Z. I can get about 3X as close as my dedicated "macro lens" set that I used to use. It works great.

B A H
WOW!
Now that is close, and you are brave!
What close up lens did you use?

Their nest is threatened. I had a great time taking pics of wasps awhile ago, but when I got too close to the nest they first took on this threatening posture, then flew towards me. I was on a ladder doing this and had to jump off a few times. They're not as aggressive when they are out foraging, just don't disturb their nests, thats when they really get PO'd. And be careful, these babies can sting multiple times, unlike bees, which die when they sting...

These are great!! I have a "pet" hive right by the front door of my apt. I have learned to "coexist" with them. Amazingly, I do not get pesty sales people trying to sign me up for the paper, sell me 6 month old candy or get me to send kids to Cancun! :)

Curious...I have found that ISO 400 is workable if you do not use a filter and get the exposure right on 0.0.

In PS I have found that if you brighten the blue channel a tad that it removes some of the noise from blue skies...

Really nice shot Kathy. You can really see it's face.

Not sure if I'd be willing to risk it like that at their nest. LOL. I hope the nest wasn't that high when you had to jump off the ladder. ; )

Thanks Rich. I've found also that if your exposure is even a little bit off, the noise at ISO400 can ruin the shot even. Good tip on the blue channel as well. Thanks.

LOL. Yeah, sure. I'll try that with the wasps today. I thought it might be cool to have a macro of a wasp injecting me with venom. LOL. ; )

...taking the picture with the wasp sitting on YOUR SKIN!

Then you'd be in for some fun!
