D60/16-35mmL Cathedral pictures

This has got to be a popular gallery with what appears to be "elusive" pictures for some of you. Every time I go to the gallery the pictures are there and fine. Is it pbase.com or have I done something wrong?

I posted the file on a different webpage that I hope will help you see the pictures:

http://homepage.mac.com/lhays/PhotoAlbum3.html

If any of you have any suggestions, let me know if it's something I've done wrong.

Thanks,

Lana Hays

Today was yet another learning experience. I went to St. Mary's
Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption in Covington, Kentucky and
shot some pictures. I used my new Canon D60 with the Canon
16-35mmL lens and a tripod. This was only my second attempt at
using a wide angle. I am more of a "telephoto" person and I am
only beginning to learn how to use the lens and in what situations.
It seems that what I think might be a good use for the lens isn't
and what I don't think about probably is. Nevertheless I was
pleased with my results. The pictures were saved in a small jpg
and I'm afraid that they may not do them justice. However, I
printed several out as 8X10's and they were incredibly sharp.
Let me know what you think.

The pictures are not visible to me on your new alternate website either.
Properties from right mouse click gives size as -1.
Strange?!

Other pbase albums work for me, just not your's. After I try your's, I have to restart IE 6, then others work OK, but still not your's. If I try theirs first, its ok, but if I try yours first, no others will work until I restart IE.

Maybe you should erase that album and try reloading it to pbase.

For all those (which seem to be most of you) I have dumped the gallery, resaved a couple of the pictures with less manipulation and reloaded them again.

Try the original link and let me know if you can see them now. I have not had any problem all day seeing them so I don't know what happened. If you can't view this gallery, let me know if you can view the Zoo pictures. There was no problem with them the other day. That way I might be able to narrow down what was wrong.

I can view your pictures fine on the new site, so it must be a Pbase thing. Maybe an errant script or something. Anyways, I have to say I really like Back.jpg as well. It's well exposed, sharp, and shows excellent composition I think. This kind of subject matter really looks great for doing experiments in image stitching, perhaps along with a bit of rectilinear correction. Check out this thread which has a link to a gallery that has some really good examples of what I'm talking about:

I look forward to seeing more of your work as time progresses. I need something to keep me satiated after all, while I wait for my D60. :-)

Your Pictures are wonderful. I love our Zoo shots, I went to the Binder Park Zoo in Battle Creek, MI today with my new D60 and my pictures are nowhere near as good.

The cathedral is gorgeous. Your new lens is great.

Thanks for sharing your photos with us.

There is nothing funny about a -1 size. It gives no clues to anything. Any image from any site anywhere will be listed as -1 until the image is downloaded.

Hi Lana ... those pics were great ... I tried but never had a TPOD with me so they were all blurred ... but got some nice outside ones althought there not the same Cath as yours , these are of Gloucester Cathedral in England.

As the Cath its self is hemed in by buildings I could never get the thing completly into one shot .... Ther taken with a D60 and Sigam 17-35 Wide with poloriser.

Alright Lana, stop it right now! Now you're coaxing me to add another lens to my wish list!

Those are great photos but it should be noted -- a good lens is only a tool. You are the mastermind behind those shots. I love the composition!

Great job -- thanks for sharing. Glad you were able to get the problem solved at pbase.

LOL With those shots you do NOT have to visit the hundreds of churches and cathedrals I have in Europe and all over the world. Your shots incorporate them all. You have captured all there is from churches. Very nice work.

Lisa -

Thanks for the compliments. It took 3 trips to the Cathedral to get some of it right. The first time, I didn't have my wide angle lens so I used the 28-105mm (and forgot my reading glasses.....DUH!). The next time I had the wide angle lens but had not yet been able to contact anyone in the rectory to get permission to use a tripod. The last trip I got permission and remembered everything. I was there for almost 2 hours just looking around and shooting pictures. This Cathedral has 57 stained glass windows and has the largest stained glass window in the US. It is worth a trip to visit. I sometimes have a hard time shooting pictures because I am in awe and just want to sit and admire its beauty.

You have got to put this lens on your list. At first I didn't think I would like it because you use it differently. I struggle with composition. My mother was a professional artist and had a great eye for pictures. I didn't inherit any of her ability but rather majored in biology. For me, I think in terms of everything "centered". I have learned to compose a picture and then automatically move several steps to the right or the left for the most part. Things are definitely different when you look through this lens. Looking through the lens is just not what you think it's going to be if you've never used a wide angle before. It has been fun and I have learned a lot just from using this lens.

Don't let my husband hear that. I'm going to Italy at Christmas with the choir from the school where I teach. They will be singing in several of the cathedrals and basilicas and I bought this lens especially for the trip.
