1st Shot from Seal concert with M8 and 50 Lux

and your shots are AMAZING. Crazy-Good. LOVE THEM.

That first one has got to be one of the best concert photos I've ever seen.

Superb!

Wonderful capture. IThe M8 looks great in low light as you have used it. t's wonderful to be so close, with a musician whose music you love, a fancy camera in your hand (that you both share a passion for), and with the experience of knowing that this musician with whom you have had a personal communication! Congrats on all of this. I am looking forward to more images from the concert with the M8!

Wow! I just got home and saw all of these kind comments. Thanks!! I will be posting a gallery tonight hopefully and will post the link to it when its up. The M8 did amazingly well and shooting wide open was not as hard as I thought. I did find out today that my M8 is out of alignment though, and what I previously thought were lens issues turned out to be a body issue.

My M8 focuses good up close, but anything at a distance is a blur and it back-focuses. I was lucky to get these shots but I was pretty close. Anyway, thanks again for the comments!

Is this the issue where you believed that the UV/IR filter on your 50 Lux was making the pictures soft and low contrast, or is that still the case?

Really great picture that proves the M8 capable of more than I had ever dreamed possible.

what was the ISO setting?

The 1st shot was at 1.4, 50 Lux ASPH at ISO 160. 2nd shot was with the 75 Summarit, 2.5 and ISO 640.

This 75 back focuses big time when the subject is at a distance. Just not sure if its my M8 body or the lens. I have to figure this out, but do know the 50 Lux does this but to a lesser extent than the 75 so I am guessing its the body. Up close focus is razor sharp, but shooting a subject at say, 30 feet causes back focus.

Also, one of my top 3 shots of the night was with the D90. I know this is Leica but I will post only one D90 shot here (most were just so so) as it has some emotion going on..

Don't apologize for d90 shot- it's great and I love it. I use my d90 (16-85 vr) as the default grab n shoot camera that my wife and kids can pick up and get the shot anytime. Not as much fun or challenging as the M8 but has its purpose. I downsized from the d700 to the d90 and the weight dropped dramatically but the image quality didn't (within reason, fps, low light, etc). It's actually a good complement to the M8 so don't part with it. Keep up with the great pictures. Kevin

Steve, I had the same with mine, after talking to Leica I sent in the M8 and my lenses and all where adjusted, since then no problems, even after I got my M8.2 all is functioning well, so it seems to me like it's a one time adjustment they need for the M8s.

I was a bit concerned if focusing would be still ok on my MPs and that's all ok as well.

Thanks Laki,

I did some more testing today and it may just be the 75 Summarit. It is WAY WAY off at infinity and when I look through the RF patch and put the lens at infinity it goes a bit past it, meaning the RF patch lines up but then goes past that point to where it is no longer aligned.

Im taking it back and testing it on an M8.2 body at the shop to rule out my body though.

Is this not normal? All of my lenses (RF and other) show blur at infinity and from what I have read this is because 1) no object is actually at infinity and 2) a built-in tolerance to achieve infinity-focus in the face of changing material properties at different temperatures/environments.

Then again if you say WAY off perhaps that is something else...

You really grabbed the bull by the horns, Steve.

The photos are superb, and perhaps may open doors for you in this area of photography. Who knows, right?

Either way, you made a singular moment count, no matter what else comes of it.

Thanks for allowing us to experience it vicariously.

Peter.

Fantastic photo! This is the kind of picture that I strive to produce and why I love the Leica M system. As a photographer, one needs to work harder with Leica M to get these results -- no auto focus, no through-the-lens composing, etc. -- but when it comes together, true artistry is achieved.

Truly fantastic photos (some of the best concert shots I've seen on this forum or elsewhere), and your account of the night on your blog was a great read.

I'm a bit shocked by the complete lack of noise in the M8 shots at ISO 160. Do you use any special noise reduction solution in post-processing? What shutter speeds were you getting at ISO 160?

thanks again for the post!
