I don't get many shots per full charge of battery when I have IS switched on with my 70-200/f2.8L IS lens. With a non-IS lens I can get up to 300 RAW shots per battery. With the IS lens on it drops to about 50.

Does anybody else experience this?

Both of your numbers sound very low. With the 100-400IS I have gotten 400 RAW pics easy with IS on the whole time, and lots of half-pressed shutter time tracking animals.

Using a microdrive?

Have always used a Microdrive so that can't be making a difference.

Yes, I have noticed that the 70-200 IS USM eats my battery pretty quick when IS is on (which in my case is all the time, since I shoot handheld).

No, I mean BOTH of your numbers are low. Sounds like the MD is the reason for that. But, there could be something wrong with your IS mechanism that causes it to draw excessive current. 50 pictures is insane.

David,

Last week I was at a dude ranch in Cody, Wyoming waiting for the bus to take us to Yellowstone. I had the 1D with 100-400IS, and a microdrive and what I thought was a fully charged battery. Anyway, I saw a hummingbird on the feeder, and started shooting (with a 1.4X......lots of blurry images handheld), later at Yellowstone all the others asked me why I was not photographing the wonderfull wildlife with my "super" camera. I was a little embarrassed to reveal that my battery was dead. My only conclusion is that the IS ate the battery up while I was dinging aroung with the humming bird........sadness!

with my d60 and 100-400 L IS (IS ON) and 1 GB MD
i took 520 Shoots. i use JPG, no RAW.
Sleepmode 2 Min. set, Review ON.
My Secondary Battery is not so good.
Only 340 Shoots possible.
So i think your Battery is weak.
Make your Test again with a new Battery.

Get it checked out.

I shot about 250 pix on a half charged set of batteries at a Renaissance Festival last weekend using the same 70-200/f2.8L IS.
