Tethered D1x NEF transfer time.

I'm interested in using this camera with NC3 tethered in studio for portraits and product photography. Can someone give me an idea on how quickly a NEF is transfered to the computer? I'm sure computer performance will dictate this next question, but once transfered, how easy is it to enlarge the image on the monitor to check detail? Is anyone using the D1x this way and if so, are you pleased with the performance?

I have almost decided to purchase a used D1x over the D100, but I still can't find much information about tethering the D1x. I have seen digital backs in action that are tethered to computers, and the ability to view the image on screen, check focus and detail, etc is great.

Thanks for the help and insight.

I shoot tethered all the time in studio. I am on a pc and use NC2 and NEFs. I have it set up to show thumbnails on top and as each new image is shot a larger size image will be in another frame. I have never recorded the speed but it's up in seconds. When I am shooting a catalog the AD is watching the monitor as I shoot and as soon as he sees the shot we need it's on to the next oufit which is great. It's also easy to zoom in on that image also to see details. I bought a 32ft firewire cable and that adds a lot of freedom to move around.

The transfer is handled via Firewire and it takes just a few seconds on PC workstation. As the other poster noted – someone at the monitor can see the image before the photographer may walk across the room – the extra long lead is good – I must get one myself.

I have not found the situation so good on my laptops – neither have Firewire and the PCMCIA Firewire card adapter does actually work but my laptops freeze after about three transfers – I never studied this but assume I need far more muscle (my laptops are both P11 600MHz) – if you want to do location work this might be worth an investigation.

Depends. Compressed or not compressed NEF.

Compressed NEF about 15 seconds (same time as in camera writing to CF-card). NOT compressed it takes 4 seconds. JPG-files even a bit more fast (about 2 seconds). You do see a thumb and a larger viewing screen of the image. You can enlarge the image to 100% (or more) to see detail immediately. Also see shooting-data within a mouseclick.

When the camera is in tethered mode... does the camera store directly to the HD in the computer and not to the CF at all? -- In other words does the computes HD appear as the storage device for the camera?

The image is held in a cache file on the PC until saved in either NC2 or PS when it becomes available to the system.

Unsaved files can only be opened via NC2 – if opened via the PS plug-in later they are changed and cannot be restored as Nefs. Trying to re-open these files gets a warning from NC2 as to their incompatibility*

I think this feature on NC3 is disabled – but I’m not sure.

..... and its name is in the format of ImgXXXX.nef.

I think in the very near future, high-end DSLR will have a wireless device (such as Bluetooh) installed in it, no more long firewire or USB cable. Before that happen, I think the Taiwanese will come with a device that you can clip on your belt, connecting to the D1X, D1H or D100 using the firewire or USB port and send radio signals to your PC in a wireless fashion.

I bet it will be around soon.

Bluetooth is very slow.. If it is wireless it needs to be 802.11b or faster, else you'll wait forever for large images. Bluetooth is good for passing parameters, and text files, but not for real data.

The D1x firewire interface works pretty well with my PIII 1G PC.... it tooked about 10 mins. for a full download of a 1G microdrive.
