S2 Pro - What's up with those shadows?

That's in-camera sharpening. That's why the out-of-camera images look, at first blush, attractive. Try to process those images further and you will see artifacts.

The S2 produces some sort of shadowing or discoloration around the
(zoomed in) black numbers and lines, but the D100 and D60 don't.

What's up with that?

So are you saying that the S2 doesn't have superior image quality because we're comparing sharpened S2 photos to unsharpened D100 and D60 photos? Are we comparing apples to oranges here?

In other words, ff you turned down the sharpening, you would get rid of the shadowing and discoloration but lose the sharpness as well?

The S2 seems great, but I'm playing a little devil's advocate here.

Any thoughts?

This is really a small file to be posting compaired to the mega files posted for viewing.. This is internet quality sutible for email! Lot's of tweeking done with Qimage and orig file is 6 meg jpg.

I don't really see shadow noise and there has been no noise reduction done to this image. Contrast, brightness, USM for the small file....

What I am saying is that the majority of the pictures I see out of the S2 are sharper than the D60 or D100. This has nothing to do with optical sharpeness, and has everything to do with the level of in-camera sharpening. The gray ripple (shadow) seen on the referred to images is an image artifact and smacks of a sharpeness halo.

Yes.

The S2 is a great camera, but so is the D100 or D60. Different design choices. Each camera has strenghts and weaknesses, depending on what you are after. You can take your pick on a multitude of basis, all equally valid. Blunt statements at this level such as A is better than B is ego and emotion driven, not reason.

Brian,

Actually, I have a similar issue, though more to do with the dynamic range of the image.

I downloaded image 020728-1452-33.jpg (which is substantially a tree in the foreground with deep shadows on the underlying lawn). I'm curious as to how much impact the jpeg has on the dynamic range of the color in the shadows vs a RAW file.

Additionally, I'm printing off of a 1280, and on the offchance someone reading this has both an S2 and a 2100 (or 2200), I would also appreciate feedback on the printing of said shadows in the image. Currently, with only the unsharp mask ffilter in Photoshop 7, the foreground shadow prints absolutely black. I suspect that the 2100 (2200) will substantially improve on this with the 25% black ink.

I don't own an S2 but I assume it has a variable amount of sharpness which can be user controlled. If Phil were to post comparisons of each of the camera's sharpness levels (and contrast) it would soon get out of hand.

It obvious the S2 can resolve more lines than either the D60 or the D100. This should only be used to judge how good the CCD and optics are.

I currently own an Olympus E-20 and was considering a D100 but after seeing Phil's review I am seriously considering the S2.

Are there any owners of the S2 that can comment on problems or really good points. I really like that it has firewire.

I also own a Nikon FM2, would those lenses fit the Fuji S2?

Thanks,
