IS vs large aperture

--

Lots of good advice here. My advice is, unless you can shell out the $1000 for the Canon 17-55/2.8IS, you're going to need flash for consistent good results.

Direct flash looks terrible (but still better than ISO 1600 f/1.4). Bounce flash can look very natural and let you use reasonable ISO's and apertures.

Get a 430EX.

What you said is not totally true. I think you actually HAD figured out what would work best for you (as regards to flash) in your post.

You stated clearly "I can't imagine my son continuing in whatever photo-worthy action he was pursuing when flashed a bunch of times. I can guarantee that after a burst of just five flash shots, my wife would tell me to stop."

It's clear from the above statement coupled with a lot of negative statements you made in your post against flash use....... that it isn't going to work for you or your family. One doesn't need to wear diapers to see that. That is why I didn't see the point in wasting time on you answering further flash questions.

Also, if you really want to acquire knowledge on flash.....there is no better way that to have your own real life experiences. So go out and acquire/borrow a flash like the rest of us. Your G6 accepts one, don't it? Same in practice as a DSLR, with just different levels of focus and shooting speeds.
