Need good Paparazzi lens

Ha!
for all the people who are crying "vultures!"

It all depends on how you carry yourself. For every celebrity that doesn't want a "paparrazzi shot" there are tons of celebs who DO want paparrazzi shots! There are streets in Los Angeles where celebrities go to purposefully take shots with paparrazzi!

Honestly, it's not my line of work, but just like in any line of work, there are different types of people. Don't judge everybody. Not everybody is the "sell their mother for a dollar" type.

I expect the paparazzi are the jailer of the famous. In many cases famous people believe they can pontificate to the masses about social, political and moral issues. The paparazzi give them some comeuppance for that pontification.

Shut up and sing!

Thanks paparazzi, and if you make a few bucks in the process, good on you.

Whenever a photo is in a magazine of a celebrity.... Its publicity.
Whenever theres a made up story behind the photo... Its publicity.

I know I had never heard of Amy Winehouse before a photo of her was taken 'supposedly' snorting coke.

Suddenly shes the most talked about pop 'star', and everyones helping fund it.

Papparazzis are always going to be there....Still I think sometimes they get carried away...Sitting outside a restaurant while a celebrity eats dinner with family for example is ridiculous, and its embarrassing how a story is made out of it...

"Wow, it looks like she really does leave her house, and look how she spends her time...eating with family...."

Rivetting stuff people...

you guys are pretty far out about music
unless for music you just mean pop stuff, (but at least you should
specify it)
which i agree about the process
check out some live recording of brad mehldau, chris potter, joshua
redman, glenn gould, yo yo ma, wiener philarmoniker and thousands of
other amazing musicians
no slice or bullcr@p there
just amazing musical talent and instrument virtuoso
please stick with photography, i am sure you know better about it
than music
Actually, I am a musician. Please don't assume.

Should tell you more than the comments of those who are not Paparazzi.
Would the 100-400 IS be a good lens. I bought a 40D from someone
that was doing Paparazzi work and they were using the 70-200 IS 2.8.
They want $1400 used for the lens but I fighured that I would check
out the 100-400 IS since it is about the same price new and give more
range. Which one would be prefered for that type of work?

if you believe in something why not take the platform and say your thing?
Why just because someone is famous do they lose the right to speak out?

And would you rather they bought ten more Enzos or put some of the money to some cause they believe in?

Somehow some left wing Hollywood activist whose life has been skewed by new found wealth, lives in the bubble of fame, pontificating about things that won’t affect them but will or could affect the masses (the rest of us) in a negative way is being negatively affected or impacted by paparazzi, in what way should I care about that?

first i believe some of them had some ideas in their head about things before they ever came into their new found wealth

second i'm sure after a while the new found wealth is just new found wealth and maybe they feel like doing something a little more meaningful

being in a bubble doesn't protect one from seeing old-growth forests being cut down, or potentially needing to make use of stem cells or some cancer treatment in the future, or from not getting upset by a shopping mall on some amazing viewpoint, or breathing in crappy air, getting poisoned by under-inspected food, not notice dying hemlocks or sugar maple forests failing from ozone and acid rain, etc.

and i don't see how helping some orphans in africa or trying to fight malaria and so on hurts the masses any (and the latter might even help you if you ever go on safari by lessening chance you yourself get sick)

finally, not all of them are left wing

but whatever

You will be taking photos in poor light more often than not, and you will have the liberty of heavy cropping because such pictures don't need to be of the best possible resolution.

My advice: go for the 70-200 f/2.8 IS or non-IS depending on budget.

An alternative: two bodies with 24-105 on one camera and 300 f/4 IS on the other. This will help with both in-your-face shots as well stealth shots. You could also compromise a bit on the aperture and go with the 28-300 L lens.

Whatever lens you choose, get one that has ring USM and has reliable focusing at wide apertures. And make sure you save money for a 580 ex II or some other powerful flash, preferably with a battery pack for fast recycling. That is probably more important than lens choice.

Happy hunting!

Disclaimer: This is just my 2 cents worth based on what I think would work best - I am not a paparazzo and don't have first-hand experience with such photography

Myself having zero experience with Paparazi photography, but a vivid imagination I think there are six basic kinds of scenarios, each needing a different type of lens.

1. Shooting undetected from a hide-out. 800/5.6, carbon fiber tripod, weather sealed camera, a rucksack with built-in stool. Camouflage tape on lens.

2. Shooting undetected by hiding the camera while still being close and in full view. Any small consumer zoom lens.

3. Approaching and shooting "point blank", and then run for it.
Any small, easy to hide camera, with very fast AF.

4. Pursuit, back-peddeling etc. A fast wide-angle lens. 24/1.4

5. High speed pursuit from a car or motorbike. A wide-angle or moderate tele with IS.

6. Defensive weapon use when the bodyguards want to beat the daylights out of you... Any white lens will do, but it should not be too heavy so you loose your speed.

good idea

also with the 16-35 they get a great distortion , they can act like they are genuinely surprised to see the photogs and the publicist didn't call in advance to arrange the surprise-shooting

fun all the way

:)

Doesn't the f/4 have a plain hood? (no petals)

I think those are 2.8, based on hood and maybe size too.

Best regards,
Alex

40D is aquired... add a Manfrotto 190 tripod (2.1kg) not to heavy in my book mounted on the (good striking weapon as well) add head of choice.

As for lenses i'd say some kind of short zoom and then a 70-200 2.8 + TC if reach needed.

But i'd strongly as f-ing fast car + a membership to local gym over it all... this membership should be discounted as well as you will only need the treadmill ...

This post should be regarded as being seriously unserious and ment only for laughs... Have fun being a paracite to the lowsy pos society some people actually try to be part of rather then destroying...
