I upgraded from my D100 back in early December to a D200 and got it for a song. My only trouble was that reading the current chatter on this forum made me feel like 'the train had left the station'. Everybody was talking what's next after the D300 and so on. Now that BB has re-invigorated the D200 crowd, they'll be lots of Q/A's to jump in on and learn as if that body had just got released. Well except for the banding issues and all that distraction.

Welcome all new D200 owners....

Oh by the way... Spring has sprung, at least around these parts.

Welcome.

I was one of the guys who updated from the D100 when the D200 first came out. I really liked the D100 but the combination of it's poor lighting control and my terrible lighting ability were a train wreck waiting to happen. The D200 CLS system and even just sticking my SB600 on the flash bracket were light years ahead--pardon the pun.

I've had no desire to "upgrade" to the D300 and prefer to spend the extra thousand dollars on glass.

Well I just boarded the Nikon boat about two months ago and bought a pair of D200s and love them! Sure the D300 has some nice advances and whatever replaces it will probably be pretty nice too but I am going to put more money in lenses and accessories than bodies this time around. I've already shot a couple hundred pictures with my D200s and am looking forward to thousands more! Its an awesome camera and is a heck of a bargain right now! Happy shooting!

Bruce, I agree that the D100 was/is a very fine camera. I too tired of some of it's lackings, for me it was the poor buffer performance during airshows. I was getting rather good at panning with both eyes open and timing that 'one perfect' shot. I hope I don't get caught up in the 'spray and pray' method of 5 fps busrts too much. See ya round the Forums and thanks for the welcome.

a pair, huh? bet that came out to roughly the price of the d300, which i doubt is twice the camera :P

the d200's still a very capable camera. i was one of the people who neglected to upgrade, because i just didn't see anything the d300 had over the d200 that i actually needed. marginally better high ISOs stuff, but... i make do.

The D200 is quite capable and a real bargain now. But I'll be even more excited when we can buy the D300 on closeout for $600 in a few years! Or can you imagine a used D3 selling for what a used D2x sells for now? The question is simply how long it will be.

Yes, the D200 is a great camera and yes, the D300 does have a few features up on it, but it will be 2012+ before you see a D300 at BB for $600.

For now the $600 D200 is the best deal out there!

--Just received my D200 from BB. I have a problem to format the Memory card when using the quick Delete/Format and the Mode buttoms.

According to the Manual guide, turn the camera on, then press simultaneously the Delete/Format and the Mode buttons for about 2 seconds until " for " blinks. Press Delete/Format again.

I follow exactely the instruction, but It did not Format my memory card ?
Please Help. Anything I did it wrong?

I still able to format at the Menu.

I received my D200 body Monday, upgraded from a D80. I haven't done any "typical" shooting with it yet, did use it Tuesday when my son Adrian was born. So far I do love it.

I do find it easier than I thought using its unorthodox playback-zoomi

ng method compared to the D80 "normal" way, do find it more awkward jumping from-to thumbnail view. But I LOVE being able to set it to release-priority in single autofocus, it really makes the camera so responsive. Love the ISO in viewfinder full-time, lack of scene modes, its tough body (reminds me of the Nikon F-series from film), and most of all its meter (as I thought) seems much more consistent & predictable than the D80's.

And, as silly as it sounds, the sound it makes when it fires sounds so "classic" like the old-timey greats like the Minolta SRT-101, Nikon FM etc.

Images to come when I get a chance. But so far I love this thing.

Going from the D70 to the D200 was light years ahead for me. I love
this new (to me) camera.
having used both cameras (i bought me mum a d70 a few years back), i can understand that statement. the d200 is a much more advanced camera in terms of controls. and i find the auto WB a lot more accurate.

Here are 2 shots I've taken with it. Neither are spectacular, not "D200 worthy" if you will, but hey--it's a start, it was practically my 1st day with it.

Both are of Adrian on his day of birth, and a Vivitar 283 flash was used. Lens was a cheapie 28-100 G.

(1) Seconds out of the womb (kind of graphic)

(2) Nice cute shot, except for that darned cord near his right-eye which I forgot to move (will redo and clone out later)

Now time to get some masterpieces with it.

Just received my D200 yesterday, from BB. This thing does more than I will probably ever need to do, but I couldn't pass it up. Aside from a hot pixel in the rear LCD, it's a picture taking machine. Not as heavy as my F5, but it still has some heft to it. I especially like being able to use some of my old AIS lenses. Can't wait to get out more this weekend and run it through its paces.

Can I ask what lens the members here use the most? 18-55? Primes? AF-S? VR? I have a 50F1.4D, 28-105D, and an older 70-210D lens. They aren't the fastest focusing, but were sharp using film. I'll find out shortly how they hold up to the crop factor.

Thanks

My two primary lenses are the Tokina 12-24 and Nikkor 35-70mm 2.8 zoom, which I have owned for 15+ years. I also have a slew of Nikkor fast primes and 2.8 zooms covering 20mm-300mm before taking into account the 1.5 DX cropping factor. I still have MF lenses that I purchased new in 1982.

manual focus primes. gotta love 'em.
and an older 70-210D lens.
f/4-5.6?

i have one of those. been using it alot recently, to excellent results. takes some pretty decent pictures as long as you're using a fast enough shutter speed. i can handhold it (d200/mb) at 1/60th at the short end, but i prefer somewhere in the 1/125-1/250th range.

quick-zoom is the single most useful thing on the camera. great for checking for blinkies, and for double-checking focus etc.

i tend to turn off the auto-preview by default, btw. i hear it helps the battery life. i'd rather tell it to preview myself, after firing off maybe four to five shots in a row using the "continuous low" mode (set to 1 second). preview, pop the quick zoom, and compare.
its tough body (reminds me of the Nikon F-series from film),
it's built very similar to an f6, iirc. definately a good replacement for those of us that liked the built-like-tanks metal bodied film cameras.
And, as silly as it sounds, the sound it makes when it fires sounds
so "classic" like the old-timey greats like the Minolta SRT-101,
Nikon FM etc.
it's so satisfying. i've heard other people comment on this too -- it makes a very hearty ka-thunk like it means business. it's not very... sneaky. but if you want that, get a rangefinder. :D

My favorite 3-lens kit is Tokina 12-24, Nikkor 80-200f2.8 AF-D and either 50f1.4 or 60f2.8 macro depending on planned outing. I'm trying to get a cheap walk-around for my wifes D70s so I can get my 24-85 AFS back or I'll spring for the new 16-85 AFS. How's that 18-135 as a single use lens on the D70s? Or maybe the AF-S Zoom-Nikkor ED 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6G IF DX VR (that's a mouthful)
