I really like this shot. To me, the lighting and colour are really clean.

Yes, there are many distracting elements in the background. However, not every shot has to be a studio shot, and you have done such a nice job with the subject that she overwhelms the background, rather than the background overwhelming her.

You could have chosen a more simple background, but it seems that you have taken a very realistic home setting and made it work. Well done.

The light outlining her nose is a bit bright, but it also provides definition and gives the impression of sunlight coming through the window. You might try tweaking this a bit, but I really do like the photo just the way it is.

thank you Andy... what is your though on the crop at her knee? I feel like the dress forced me to crop at a joint where as normally I wouldn't.....

I am not the person to advise on crops - I drive myself insane with the possibilities.

I agree that at least some bit of the dress hem helps to delimit the bottom of the picture. You might try cropping at what would be 1 inch above the slight crease you see in her right knee. That way you still see some hem and bit of her legs. You could then also smooth just a bit to further disguise the very top of the right knee.

Fortunately the shape of the dress does not indicate very clearly where the knee is, so the issue of cropping at a joint is less obvious than if she had been wearing trousers or a short dress.

Her face is quite compelling in this photo, so my eye is not easily drawn to the bottom of the dress.

Hi Brian

I really like this. As someone else said, it looks really fresh and 'clean'. In fact, one of the nicest shots I've seen on here in a while.

I can sense the leg crop is bothering you. I'd try cropping it higher up - at the edge of the dress to eliminate her legs altogether. What do you think?

Best regards

Paul

Hi Paul.... on the crop, it's the only way I could make sense of the shot. I guess rules are made to be broken as long as you know what they are... and thank you very much... Louisa is a wonderful, amazing model. LMK if your going to be in LA and I'll get you in contact with her. :) -bmb

I really like the shot. Great colour - particularly the greens outside contrasted against the purples in the dress. It looks fresh and invigorating. I like the angle, and I like the knee crop. So there you go, someone with no complaints at all.

One question tho: what is the flash with 1/2 CTO outside window contributing to the shot - I can't see this lighting effect?

And one joke: Is this a random model or a random shot? ha ha

thank you, not 1/2 cto, it's 1/2 ctb. you can see the effect on her face :)

Bad choice of background (very distracting), dull posing, boring lighting.

Sorry for being pretty harsh, but to me there's nothing special at all about this picture. It's one of those millions of pictures made by mediocre amateur or 'pro' photographers with lots of expensive gear at their disposal, but not one interesting or original photographic idea or concept.

Now do I think that my pictures are better? Definitely not. But I try hard to develop my own style, my very own 'handwriting', to take pictures that express the way I SEE the world and the things that surround me instead of replicating the obvious.

Sorry, but pictures like this always make me wonder WHY you take pictures in the first place, what your intent is. To me that's much more important than technical perfection.
