New camera on the 25th according to press invitation

good move, obviously a new rebel probably available in japan for whatever spring/easter holiday they have and late spring over here (mothers/fathers day, graduation) if they were smart (has canon been smart anytime recently though?)
There will be a press invitation for a new camera if we may believe
this (danish) website:

What it will be i can't tell...

lol.. I love that translation.

"We have just spoken to Canon and they confirm that this time will not be any launch of the otherwise very famous calculators that are made from recycled copiers."

I mean .. WTF .. calculators from copiers?

they continue to make billions annually on camera sales - I wouldn't call that exactly stupid.

even if they made trillions that doesn't mean they didn't leave money on the table and were immune to mistakes.

sales down & slow economy

dSLR share percent down significantly

they sell copiers, printers & ink too

... and a lot has changed in the Pro area since then (e.g. Nikon D3,
D700). In my opinion it would be really tiem for an answer,
especially aiming at professional sport and press shooters, an area
where the 5D MarkII does not offer too many valid arguments.
actually I agree with the current rumour - there's no market really for who the camera would be purchased by at this time, newspapers, agencies, etc all are feeling the crunch, so why come out with a new one?

it will be a rebel - that line needs another body, I expect to see video, manual controls and an articulated screen just to send everyone in here into a frothing mess of anguish.

actually their percentage hasn't changed that significantly .. nikon has made greater inroads at the expense mostly of the smaller camera companies. canon's always floated around the high 40's, low 50's market share.

and besides, I hate to tell you the marketshare battle occurs on the rebel and XXD series bodies, and definately not any camera that this forum would be interested in. canon makes / sells more rebels in a month than all the cameras in this forum does in a year.

and in economic times, a DIII replacement wouldn't be in order, but a cheaper, sexier rebel will sell.

there's more people out that that will pay 500-600 for a camera, then there is that will pay 4K+ for a camera.

so in tough economic times where sales are important - the last thing that would make sense is a 1 series.

... usually development of a new product is a long term process. So when they decided to start the development of a successor (e.g. for a 1series camera) 18, 24 or more months ago, there was no sign of crisis and downgoing economy.

So why not release it, when it's ready? Not doing that would only make sense if the market is more or less totally (!) collapsed and/or they see a way to launch a much (!) better product with 6 or 12 month more time for development.

"Ready" meaning ready for tooling. If they have already begun production, then they are more likely to release the product regardless of the economy.

Timing is everything. There have been Canon DSLR's that have been developed, tested and never released for any number of reasons.

People who claim to be open minded never see it my way.

no disagreement on the 1D, you are preaching to the choir there... rebels are where Canon blew marketshare quickly and where they need better models. and better ef-s lens selections.

still 2009 is gonna be an eye opener for businesses.

canon needs to cleanup many camera things, including a glut of similar powershots that don't distinguish themselves and create buyer confusion. they're approaching that with the rebels and XXd line too. they also need to get their self-made CMOS sensors shipping in the compacts for more profit. lots to do but pitfalls aplenty.

on the table and were immune to mistakes.

A new rebel would make sense but if a pro camera is ready, it is ready. What will they do throw all the r and d away and wait until the economy gets better. Technology has an expiration date, especially in this better faster bigger(more mp) easier industry. No matter what they release I'm sure Canon will be able to spin a profit on it. Maybe they spliced the 1d and 1ds together as they have been planning to do...if they bumped up mp to say 30...does anyone think that would sell in this market.

Apparently Rob Galbraiht has been testing a "modified" 1D3 ...

In all probabillity the new camera will be the 1DMarkIIIn with the strap line "AF good enough for Rob"

I heard this from a genuine Canon insider who was happy to tell me & put his career on the line

The above is all bullsh*t ... just like all the other rumour stuff!

I can see it now .. instead of blue dots on the box, they have a little headshot of Rob on the box :D
