Hi. Thinking about upgrading from a 20D to the 5D MK II but... When I look at the sample photos, particularly the portraits, to me they seem to be just slightly soft. Those of you who use the model, are the JPEGs soft? What about RAW? (with a good lens etc.) Thanks for the info.

I haven't got the camera yet. I am just looking at sample images. But I can't seem to find a portrait that is absolutely sharp. It can't be my monitor/eyes eather cause photos taken with other models look perfectly sharp...

I can't see what you're looking at but I can assure yoiu that with a decent lens this camera will definitely impress ... Unless you constantly shoot Jpegs in full auto mode like most of the people around here that complain about the camera.

Dpreview gave it a 9.5 in the image quality catagory for a reason. Perhaps you should read the review and if you're still scared just figure that most reputable camera retailers will take the camera back if you're not satisfied.

Ok, if you are going from a 20Dto a 5D2, and were wondering if you are going to get sharp photos, yes, with the 5D2, you will get sharp photos with it.

Furthermore, iso 3200 on the 20D is worse looking than 6400iso on the 5D2.

Damn, That sure is sharp! Well, that about confirms it then, I guess. For some reason I've just been looking at bad photos... Thanks again for all the help everyone!

I've done exactly that - upgraded from a 20D. When you take a shot correctly for sharpness, the 5DII is very sharp. Any lack of sharpness you see around here is purely the photographers fault - and I don't mean that in a bad way.

I myself have very few photos that can withstand sharpness pixel peeping, because I've been mostly taking pictures in conditions that are not ideal - hight iso, slow shutter speed etc ... The photos look nice and sharp printed or viewed as a whole, but do look soft when viewed 100%.

The few people that have posted studio samples here of the 5DII have been criticized for being too sharp, not flattering to the model, etc ... so you can't win. But, you can't argue that those pictures are not sharp.

Here are a few not-good-photographs that have been taken with a strobe and show that the 5DII can be as sharp as any lens. No art here, just tests or utilitarian pictures.

I was selling my 70-300 so I took some harsh light photos to show it was in good shape.

and a crop

Here is a crop from jpg - which actually kills a lot of detail - so imagine how the RAW would look. But even running a very faint sharpness filter would make this pretty sharp. I didn't need to shoot raw for this, so sadly I can't show you how good it would have looked.

Sharpened a little:

If you truly need convincing, set up an easy scene with your 20D that I might be able to reproduce here, and I'll make sure to get a sharp picture for you.

go ahead ...have some fun

forget about jpgs....
do RAW for some real control...
the jpgs are forced-processed ... as you suspect

RAW solves most of that

the resolution difference is really dramatic

enjoy

If you want to see sharp, check out these photos from ron purdy:

Amazing photos and the sharpness is insane. Shows what the 5dm2, in the right hands, is capable of. I still can't believe he used the same camera as mine.

However, there are some people who have had focus issues with their bodies. I think he's on his 3rd body. I've sent mine into canon (irvine) twice and they were able to find problems with the focusing mechanism each time. Don't let that scare you however as you can see tons of people posting pictures on various websites with amazing clarity.

yes

I fell out of my chair
I saw them earlier....

you are right

amazing stuff....

Both images you posted looked pretty sharp to me in their focal plane. They are each as sharp as they were intended

It seems you went out of your way to find and post photos with thin DoF.

Many people like me would think you are either a troll or a very very inexperienced photographer. I have seen trolls post before even with the 5D and their cats using 85mm at f1.2 talking about how soft and out of focus the image was.

So the question is which are you?

Thanks for the offer ...but there's been so much convincing about 50d mkII here, as well as from you, that I'm absolutely convinced now:)

Yep! Enjoy is exactly what I'm gonna do now, once I receive the 5d MKII! You've all got me convinced that it's a great camera. You've just got to be careful where you invest your money, especially as a student. The government isn't too generous with their grants here in Finland:P
