Can anyone shed some light on this one? Has anyone considered both? If so, what made you choose what you did? I know this is a Minolta forum and I expect mostly pro-Minolta comments, but I would be really curious to find out the "mindset" of you guys (and gals) who were considering both cameras.

Any help would GLADLY be appreciated.

I had the P9 and did not like it, thought the P5 actually took better pictures. I am also thinking about getting the F100, but have not seen it at any stores in my area. I have read good reviews for the F100.

Greg,

I too have read good things about the F100 both on these forums and in various reviews. However, the low-light/night capability of the F100 has something left to be desired. Since this will be my primary (and only) digital camera, I wan't the best overall performance in the smallest form factor available.

Hi I had a Sony, The colors are not realistic, I have the F-100
it is awesome, check out my car show pictures.

I considered both cameras as well, I chose the F100 because of the manual controls and the smaller size as well as superior af system. Also the reviews I read seemed to be disapointed with the softness of the Sony's Image. Also the F100 is cheaper.

I would say that the Sony has a better flash and less noise especially at long exposures. The f100 produces great images for everyday , it's really only weakness is in very low light. Unless you plan to do long exposure night shots I think the F100 is a real winner.

As much as I like the F100, based on what your saying I would probably check out either the Canon S30 or S40, They are a fair amount bigger but still compact. They also have the manual controls and excellent image quality and would be much better than the F100 at night shots.

Hi Mike
that was very well said, i have to agree with him.

Great Post- I am in the exact same situation: p9 or f100. i like their portability, and want the highest image quality. I enjoy landscape photography, including downtown skylines and sunsets. I also like shooting in B&W. I am inclined to think that the f100 has superior image quality, but am wondering what you all think about landscapes and the low light capabilities of the f100 (not really night shooting). Is the p9 any better for this purpose. I am also not excited about the AA battery situation of the f100, but the review on this site seems to like that... I like the manual controls of the f100 and the multi-shot capability of the p9 (for golf swings) but will honestly scarcely ever use them. THe p9 seemed a bit sturdier... any additional thoughts? :) thanks.

I don't know how big an impact this has on your decision, but if you plan on buying a slave flash for your DC, Sony would be the better choice.

I'm not totally sure about this, but I learned from this forum that the F100 uses pre-flash for metering purposes. That means that you'll need a slave flash that fires on the 2nd flash instead of the first, which limits your choice of flashes.

Sony doesn't use pre-flash so your choice of slave flashes is much more diverse.

I could be wrong, but I thought the P9 does use a pre-flash.

I know that the Canon takes some wonderful pics in a variety of environments. It is also one speedster of a camera (which I really like). However, this might sound nit-picky but what the heck was Canon thinking when they decided not to include a battery meter on a digital camera? With battery life being what it is, this seems like a dumb thing to do.

Thanks for all your input, Mike.

As far as your golf swing, either camera has a movie mode that would be better suited for that than the continuous . For continuous at higher resolutions the Minolta I believe will out perform the Sony. As far as sunsets and other similiar low light situations for hand held shots the Minolta does fine, it is only long exposure photography at 1 sec or longer that the F100 is horrible at. I also wouldn't use ISO above 200, but that pretty much goes for both camera's although the F100 will have more noise than the Sony at any ISO level.

Hi Mike

Actually, I tried using a normal flash on a P7 and it worked fine. I was under the impression that Sony didn't make any substantial changes between the P7 and the P9 (except for the bigger resolution).

Or it could be that the gap between the preflash and the flash on the P7 is so fast that it doesn't make a difference.

Could be wrong though.

I wonder if that is something that can be improved upon with a firmware upgrade?

My understanding is that the P9 does not have shutter and aperature priority modes and custom white balance. These are features I cannot do without.

Add to that the P9's proprietary battery and memory stick and it wasn't even a consideration for me.
