I plan to buy a printer to print high quality photos larger than 8 1/2 X 11- either 11 or 13 inches wide. Please recommend or relate your experiences with Epson, HP or Canon photo printers $600 or less.

I have had epson, canon and hp. The hp held up the best. I'm on my second canon and it is acting up while my hp photo smart 8250 is still good and I have had it the longest.
 
Suggest you try there.

Epson, mainly because:
finest detail in dark areas
overall build quality
more accurate in color reproduction
seiko mechanisms (u can't realy see them though)
advanced tech overall compared to its competitors practically in every aspect
cons

slightly increased "fuel" consumptions (inks), but the printer's monitor s/w seems to be honest though)
 
I have had three Epson printers and every one had problems with print head

blockages which takes loads of ink to clear, went to a Canon printer and over three
years later not had one print head blockage would never go back to Epson.

--With me it is the opposite, 2 canons both had problems and the same with my one epson. Only my hp has been trouble free
 
I print mostly black and white. I have had very good results from an Epson R2400 (which has been replaced by the R2880) in black and white. If you have $2000 to add to your kitty, then check out the Epson 7800! I've been using one of those for he last couple months, and ... wowza! On Ilford Smooth Pearle paper, it's stunning, and nearly indistinguishable from a darkroom print.
