I just got my 50D the other day. I attached the Sigma DG 500 Super and I am not having a lot of success with the flash pictures. Some seem exposed right and others are way over exposed. I also noticed I couldn't use the flash adjustment +- on the camera to adjust the brightness of the flash because it did nothing. If you have the Sigma flash what settings are you suing on your flash to get the correct exposure?

thanks

Yes. You need to send that flash to Sigma to update the firmware FREE for you.

It has been discussed on several forums about the problem with Canon 50D and the Sigma 500 series. It does work wonderful though with Canon 40D. When I get my 50D, i will need to send mine to Sigma too..

I have the same combination of camera and flash and would like to know if this upgrade is available in the UK. I can see no mention of it on the Sigma UK web site.

I've emailed Sigma but have yet to receive a reply. (Its early days, so I'm not accusing them of being slow to respond!!)

Make sure that that the Sigma EF 500 DG SUPER has on the back of it labelled EO - ETTL II otherwise it cannot be upgraded with the new firmware to support Canon 50D compatibility problem.

Mail the flash with a note for Canon 50D Compatibility and $10 Money Order for shipping the flash back to you. The upgrade fees is FREE.

They've just upgraded my sigma ring flash to work with the 50D and I'm about to send off my DG500 super.

If you have the original purchase receipt its free otherwise its just over £30 (don't have the job sheet to hand so I can't be precise but think it was £33)

It took around 3 weeks round trip but the ringflash works fine now its back

Mine is an older Sigma DG 500 Super, without the ETTL II marking. Does this mean that it simply won't work with my 50D?

Your flash will surely work with Canon 50D, it's just that the exposure will be off when you use the flash.. can be corrected in post processing though.
But there is no problem with Canon 40D.

Sigma UK have responded to my email within 24 hours. They quote £5, to cover postage, if I have proof of purchase from new or £33.99 if I have no proof of purchase. Will take 2 to 3 weeks.

I emailed them about an update for mine and they claimed they weren't aware of any problems with the 500 super and that there was nothing they could do for me.

It constantly underexposes about 2-3 stops with my rebel xt, 20d and 40d.

But it's erratic, I can't just set compensation add forget it. I was constantly having to adjust it and often it would still underexpose even with +3 compensation.

Yes there is. And with the 20d and with the rebel xt.

Mine constantly underexposes and If I shoot with my 17-85 IS lens, the flash locks up and and the zoom head rattles until I turn it off and back on again.

I have never had any problem on my Canon 20D and the XTi/400D and I use it about 95% on them withy various Canon, Tamron, Sigma and Tokina lens.

Why not try call them on the number in my above email. I just called them this afternoon on the 800 number. My 500 DG SUPER is going for new firmware upgrade for the Canon 50D compatibility.. I will send it with $10 S/H tomorrow.
Just tell them you are using in on Canon 50D.

Once in a while, I encouter the rattles in the zoom head, as if it's trying to zoom but got stuck. The flash doesn't work at all. After I turn it on and off a few times, the flash works fine again.

I know it's highly unlikely, but with my luck, it will come back ONLY working with the 50d (which I don't have yet)

That's a different problem. If you follow the link to the Sigma page posted above, the firmware fix is for the 50D only.

The firmware fix is for the listed sigma flash units.

No kidding, but it says it is only needed for the 50D.

And there's no reason to believe that it COULDN'T fix the problem I'm having.

If it were a firmware issue, then everyone would have the problem. Good luck in your pursuit, however.
