I haven't seen any postings about this and thought you might like to take a look at this short piece on the Sony 707:

http://www.luminous-landscape.com/columns/sm-07-29.shtml

Note that while he liked the camera a lot, he thought you guys were inexperienced and lacking in ... well, let's just say that I think he's suggesting you spend some time in the Canon or Nikon forums. (NOTE: this is certainly NOT my opinion at all, but hey, he's the expert! Ba ha ha ha ha ha ha! )

Anyway, I think you'll enjoy his article if you haven't already seen it.

well, its obvious you can't read.

quotes from that article

"Nikon is revered for its long history and assumed to be superior. Yet this disparity in reputation isn't entirely justified by the products, but its digicam offerings have so far been rather middle-of-the-pack."

"For one thing, the F707 at its ordinary street price contends directly with the Coolpix 5000, yet the latter is a rather disappointing camera that is clearly a cut below the F707 in terms of capabilities, build quality, level of seriousness"

one thing we all know here is that "its the photographer" thats more important that the equipment used.

But you seem to be more preoccupied with your equipment. Your wife must be disappointed too.

I think that no matter how good natured the jab, when someone that isn't a regular comes in and calls us all rubes, some aren't going to like it.

I don't know Don, but I too was a little surprised at the replies
here. Could be just a simply mistake, lets not get too nasty and
chase people away :)
I found it an interesting read. Thanks for the post Donald. I missed any earlier threads on this one.

the "a matter of fact" attitude of his was not so bothersome or his suggestion that "WE" all spend more time in the Canon and Nikon forum. What was annoying to me was his closing expleitif. Its a closing line that the all mighty Uly knows all too well, but used very differently :)
What Don fails to see is that that article is actually taking a jab at Nikon.
Whats really funny is Don has said it himself that he's a poor photographer.
http://www.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1009&message=2859981

Do should realize that Sony has been in the "diital" imaging business a lot longer than Nikon or Canon. hmmmm....why is it that Nikon is using Sony's CCD???...hmmmm.

The way i see it, all those mainstay camera manufacturers are venturing into Sony's domain rather than the other way around.

Iv'e had good in depth discussions with a good friend who works at Henry's Cameras(retailer in T.O.) and we've discussed buying patterns of newbys in his store. Don fits right in with those who have this grand illusion that you need to "own" a known brand name camera to be considered a real photographer. Steve, at Henry's cameras calls them posers/pretenders : )

At least Mike Johnston is willing to admit in his article that those other manufacturers are falling short when compared to the 707. And his new outlook on digital photography has be changed because of his review of the Sony 707.

"Then again, five years ago I wasn't willing to say that any digital camera was a "good camera," period, and the Sony F707 is."
Don, on the other hand has a long way to go yet.

Zip: My impression was that Don was being sarastic and not at all serious. Certainly, calling us all rubes in the title got us to read his post and pointed us to an interesting article (for those of us that were not already aware of it).

Thanks for Posting that link Donald. I had not seen that before.

It's a pretty interesting article! At first I thought it was going to be total bashing. hehe

Hadn't seen the article before and for someone who obviously has a bias against Digicams, it seems he actually liked the F707. Many of his remarks were quite complimentary. A convert in the making...

What I found interesting about the column was that for all his disdain of digital cameras he was positive about the 707 and I think he's the only person I've "met" who likes the 707's manual focus. I try using the manual focus once a week and give up in frustration.

Harry

Try using the manual focus on another digital camera, and you'll realize how good F707 owners have it.

Erik,

Good point, but why try another camera when I have a 707?

Love the camera but I just haven't mastered the # #% manual focus yet.

Classic case of "lets not judge a book by its cover".

Next time at least give it an honest attemp to READ the article before you offer your conclusion of what the author was trying to say ...

I actually found the article made the F707 looked quite good, when you considered he pretty much said all digital cameras arent good, but still gave the F707 a "good camera" ranking.

-- I kinda' resent being called a "RUBE", BUT......................I just spent the past 4 days on my 20th anniversary with my wife, learning the DSC-F707 among other things and I could not be happier with ANY camera. I've owned a KODAK DC4800, used a NIKON CP-5000 and MINOLTA 7i and briefly, VERY briefly a NIKON 5700 (didn't want my hands to rot and falll off!) and my 707 blows them all away! Not only does it take the best pictures, for my tastes, but it is a GREAT conversation starter as it makes people STARE in wonder. I like the ease of use and the option of going full auto and letting the camera "worry" for me. If that makes me a "RUBE" then SHUCKS an GOLLY ah guess ah am one!!!!
No matter where you go, there you are.

Don,

That "rube" comment was a good way to wake everyone up. Be careful, you might get banned to the Olympus forum where you can read up on all the reasons why the C2100 is so much bettter than the C700 and why you never need more than 2.1 Megapixel. :D

"he thought you guys were inexperienced and lacking in ... well, let's just say that I think"

Inexperienced? HAHA. Didn't you read his comment about Sears price matching? Does the Canon and Nikon forum have the abundance and quality of Sears price matching tips as we have?

Friendly rivalries between the forums, its all good. :)

I guess I am unsophisticated. I had to look up the definition of "rube". Well at least I learned something new today. : )
