* 02/16/09 Weekly Landscape/Scenic Show & Tell

As far as the race to the otherside, I have never seen a boat in this water. The water is extremely dangerous with fast moving tides and mud you can get stuck in.

The 1st shot, I used 2 stop ND grad filter. Also adjusted image in layers to extend dynamic range.

Quite a relaxing weekend. Had it to myself, and didn't go chasing the scenes. Needed some down time, in many ways. There's usually so many options in the Catskills that I'm anxious to be here, there, everywhere. Just let that all go.

Saturday morning I just took a walk with a body, lens, and lens pen, putting aside the expectations for needing the tripod or other lenses. Just set the body to record RAW/JPG in a B&W picture style, and shot from the hip.

40D, EF-S 17-55/2.8 IS
1/100s, f/8, ISO 100, 17mm (27mm)
Mono large JPG ouput, massaged in Aperture's converter (no plug-ins)

I was led inside after this, but I won't bore you with them here. If interested in the mono series of the Barn & Farmhouse, it's in the Challenges/Galleries forum: http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1005&message=31005929 )

Sunday, on the way back home, fit in a few stops along the way:

5D, 28-70/2.8, tripod, CP
1/8s, f/16, ISO 100, 60mm
Put a PixelGenius tan cross processing filter on top, faded 60%
(for that creamy/blue touch)

And for a preferred full view:
5D, 28-70/2.8, tripod, CP
1/8s, f/14, ISO 100, 35mm

5D, 28-70/2.8, tripod, CP
1/8s (2 stop bracketed exposures), f/13, ISO 100, 45mm

Photomatix, choosing a 2 image blend (as opposed to 3 image blend, or HDR conversion).

thx guys for your comments. i appreciate it, . regarding the colours, the orginal shot was kinda dull and darker, so i did some colour balance to make the moon and the tree pop out more. i appreciate your criticism again.. only way to learn and c through different eyes. happy shooting.

How did I miss the rest?

Splendid work on each, Dave. Much to admire here.

Gorgeously iconic. Couldn't ask for a better scene to be in front
of. I'd zoom in on those trees (just to the left of center,
right?), and fiddle with the Red and Yellow sat/luminance. There
may be two slightly different colors in that brightness, which can be
manipulated. But it's not that crucial an issue - after all, they
were in full light and quite saturated as it was.
Ok I will try that. Thanks.
Oxbow bend. A perennial icon shot, but probably my best and one I
plan to enter for judging. Like to have any comments for improvement
since I will enter it in March.
Try as I might, I can't find anything but admiration for the
composition or treatment. Sorry to disappoint. You certainly set
yourself high goals - this is one of them where it just all fell
together, and it looks deceptively easy to follow. Heh. ;)

Much to be proud of here, Ben.
Thanks Bob, it is a photogenic location.

I really like them. Great color. When were you there?
Thanks, I was there Oct. 7th. Sometimes the last week of Sep. is better, been snowed out the first week of Oct. the previous two years.
All I have left now until my March vacation is Grand Teton shots.
After today, the rest are all barns, you will probably get tired of
seeing barns, but that’s all there is.
After getting my camera back with a new sensor, I am thinking of
returning it because they shipped it to me with 13 dust spots that
won’t blow off.
Schwabacher landing. Near the parking area. The better known spot is
½ mile upstream at a beaver pond.

Had a hard time taming the yellow leaves just above the reflection.
Not sure what to do about this for future, any ideas? This is a
capture issue more than anything. I am thinking that either a channel
is blown, or the leaves are moving.
I had a similar problem with a shot I took at Maroon Bells. I think
you can fix it in raw processing.

wow, wow wow wow. These are fantastic shots. It would be a waste to choose one. Beautiful setting, gorgeous light and perfectly captured.

Hello Bob.

Thats first one is amazing for a minimally processed JPG. While micor adjusting this weekend, I used jpg and was surprised how good a job it does.

I really love the waterfalls, but I end up being drawn most to the last image. It is such a pure statement of the power of fast water which you know I am a sucker for.

Great work. I wish I had your winter time stamina.

I caught a shot of this derelict at the Ken Patrick Trailhead

Grand Canyon NP North Rim, Walhalla Plateau, Ken Patrick Trailhead

I see a little sensor dust in the sky I didn't catch during PPing.

...until I saw this one. Not that I am biased or anything but the second photo is more realistic, photographic in nature. These may not be the right words for such a description but I hope you know what I mean. I think it is so because the mountains in the 2nd contain more detail, and so do the farther trees.

The shadows and reflections in the 1st make it a stunner too.

Hi Rick, Did you use the self timer for that first shot?

Nice catch on the second with the deer in the scene. Overall I like this one best even minus the deer. I like the framing of the tree.

Last shot, also nice, you caught some better light here than our last weeks shots.

The barn is one of those where I find myself saying "Wish I had taken that!" You captured the feeling quite well.

Of the water falls I think I like #2 best.

All very nice.

Hey, it's the lens ya sold me that made that second one. The first shot is with my worse lens.

Kidding aside, thanks for the comments.

When ever I do a shot like #1 I always end up with a goofy look on my face. You did good here.

I like #2 and the tree. But it's almost too much in that my eye is drawn to the tree then the root. But that's just me.
  1. 2 and #3 make me want to go there.
Very nice!!

I am always partial to views looking down.

Edit: I just saw that you used the 18-55. Doubly impressive.
Burgess falls:
Exposure: 0.8 sec
Aperture: 22.0
Focal Length: 18mm

I really want to get back there in low light and get on the lower
trail where I can get better shots of Upper and Burgess falls. Also
note that several of these shots were converted to jpg after
processing in RAW. Yes I'm finally seeing the difference.

C & C welcome.

House cleaning first: the tree pic is cropped. I forgot to document that previously.

I was framing the shot with the tree as the main subject and trying to get a little canyon into it when I sensed a group of folks to my right out of frame chattering in a hushed but excited manner. I came up out of the viewfinder to see a group of photogs all aiming Point&Shoots at the same spot. I let my eye follow the line to the spot and there was a deer. I looked back into the viewfinder, and lo and behold, there was the deer right in the middle of my composition and I hadn't even seen it. Duh!

You make me sick Ben! Great pics...

I captured this during a walk last fall through the Monument Hill State Historical Site near La Grange, Texas. I rounded a turn in the old road and decided this scene might make a nice shot so I took a few exposures but wasn't really thrilled by what I saw on the LCD. Now several months later this shot looks much better to me, especially after some cropping and enhancements using Nik's Color Efex Pro filters. Its also nice to look at some color during these long winter months.

Shot taken with a Canon 40D tripod mounted and set on aperture priority (Av), using an EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM. The exposure was taken at 26mm, f/13 for 1/8th of a second at ISO 200 on Sandisk digital film. All post capture processing was done in Lightroom 2 and Photoshop CS3 using Nik's Color Efex Pro filters.

Thanks so much for sharing two superb photos. I think both are fantastic and give a great feeling of really being there. That has brightened up my day considerably.

I doubt that the leaves were moving in the first one - it is so incredibly still. I think it is just the angle of the sun and probably very hard to avoid. Might I ask what filters you were using?

Thanks again, I greatly enjoy your contributions to the forum.
