I had been procrastinating about purchasing the Nikon AF-S VR 70-200mm f/2.8 G IF-ED for more than 2 years. I was hoping Nikon would come out with a new lens and the price of this one would go down. I finally bought it a couple weeks ago through Amazon.com (J&R was the merchant) for $1,599.99 with free shipping (and the standard Nikon 5 year extended warranty). At the time, Amazon, J&R, B&H and Adorma were all the same or within $30. With my purchase, I could have also for an additional $13.00 gotten a 77mm Tiffen clear lens filter (I didn't, I got the Nikon NC filter instead. I just checked the prices of the lens...what a big jump up in just a few weeks!!!!

Price in January, 2009 though Amazon.com (3rd party merchant: J&R) = $1,598.88 with free shipping

Price today though Amazon.com (3rd party merchant: Cameta) = $1699.00 with free shipping

J&R today: $1,729.88 with free shipping

Adorama today: $1,849.95 with free shipping

B&H today: $1,899.95 with free shipping

Glad you got yours.

This was leaked back in mid-Jan (at least on Nikonians and other websites). Many folks got their glass before the price increase.

the price at B&H for the 14-24mm and 24-70mm jumped about $250 as well.

Ah well, I didn't need those lenses anyway : )

I really do love your comment: "I can no longer afford the lens I couldn't afford..." Might turn out to be the sentence of 2009.

Yea, the price increase was all over this website weeks before it happened. It pays to stay current. :> )

Ohh OOHHHHH.. I just realized that US prices are getting awfully close to European prices, especially the Danish, big difference is that our price of about $2000 for the 70-200mm VR INCLUDES 25% VAT

Last year decided to go all the way and I bought the 24-70/14-24, another D300 body, and then decided I was that far in I might as well go the whole way with some other items, but I still didn't get the 70-200vr and it's now on hold. This is starting to look like it may have saved me a couple of bucks. I, of course, would have saved more by not buying at all :-P, what fun is that.

One of my last purchases was the 10.5mm in dec., for approx $539 from B&H, noticed today that it was $699--probably not a typo either.

It really is time for me to get back to shooting more------------REALLY -------I do mean REALLY----------------------------need to spend my money on road trips, less on nano glass-----------------------ron s.

Yup, looks like the prices are continuing to creep up. I see the 14-24 and 17-25 are about $100 more than they were yesterday, after the price had already increased! I was saving for a new lens this year, but I don't think it's going to happen at these rates...I guess the price is not stopping folks from buying them.

The US Bailout plan must include some special lens purchase plan for folks that can't pay for the camera stuff they already have.

Yikes!!!! You are right. The 70-200 is $300 from $1600 roughly a month ago for an increase of 19%. The 16-85 is up to $630 from $520 for an increase of over 20%. The 80-200 AFS is $1100, up from, what, high $800s? Although I think the 17-55 hasn't changed (recently) and the 18-200 is at its early February $700 --- nearly its introduction price, although plenty are available.

He who hesitated is lost.

And all the social charges that are built into the price due to the cost of doing business for the merchant. :) It doesn't make sense for US prices to be as high.

I'd been eying an upgrade from a d200 to d300 for awhile when I heard about the upcoming lens price increase. All the commentators said it was only lens, no bodies. Just in case, in late january I ordered the d300 from B&H at 1400ish. Shortly afterwards B&H price jumped to 1700. I'm really glad I got it. And I love the d300!

American Dollars to 1 JPY

(Approx. 20% increase since September)

American Dollars to 1 Thai Bath (THB)

American Dollars to 1 Chinese Yuan (CNY)

To me, it looks like hardware with predominately Japanese origin take a big hit, while goods made in Thailand or China fairs better seen from the US market.

Can't comment for Thailand, but China as a rule will not allow the Yuan to vary against the US dollar.

If this is getting blamed on the exchange rate, why are the Sigmas, Tamrons, Tokinas, or even Canons not going up also?

I don't suppose anybody has heard how J&R will handle any back order issues? I ordered the 14-24 2-3 weeks ago...and it is still on backorder. And now the price is $200 higher. Actually, I JUST got my 2nd backorder notice from J&R...but I am sure that is automated. Maybe it will be automated right to my door when it comes in.

I am not saying that the lens is not worth $200 more...but it was a stretch in the first place...and a tough one to justify when the Sigma 12-24 is ok...and a heck of a lot smaller. All I am saying is that I will let it go...at least until later when the price is reduce, rebates offered, find a GOOD used one, etc.

Are we all get sucked into the supply and demand game like the gasoline prices of 2008? I am not sure if the manufacturer hinted about the price increase or is it the retailers that like to test the consumer's lust for Nikon lens! Do you see other maker's prices jumped irrationally? I wonder!
