yes really interessting, did not see this until yet, perhaps it was a correction due the strong wind this day, that the power was put by the pilot just in this moment on the other one, I don't know really
 
the answer :)

The exhaust tail acts somehow as a (very weak) "lens" - due to slightly different refraction index of the hot air. And that (irregular) "lens" blurs its background (all what is seen through it). And the far-er (oh english) the background object is, the more blur. Since the plane hull is very close to the exhaust tail "lens" it gets (almost) no distortion, but the distant mountain is distorted significantly. And since from the point of view of a camera one exhaust tail goes first "in front of" a plane first, it looks like it starts not directly from the engine (because it visibly distorts only the mountain as described above). In other words - what is visible is not the exhaust tail itself, it is its distortion what makes it visible. And only distant objects get distorted.
