Zoo called me back

More than likely, if you win they will want a negative. The Los Angeles Zoo used to have a photo contest every year. My sister won once and had to submit an original negative so they could put her picture in their calendar. Most of the entries were at least cropped. They also had the rule, no digital photos. I asked if they could maybe have a separate category for digital, but they didn't have the resources. They did make an exhibition for the digital photos, where people could vote for their favorite, but there were no prizes.

Here is the page. You can look at the digital photos or the regular contest winners. My pics (taken with a Sony FD-91) are in the digital section (kathy grogan), my sisters pic is in the regular section (teri miller).

They have since cancelled the contest

I like it - works for me. Actually, it did work for me, as I now live in another town. I should have gone for choice #2. Now I hang out here.

Well, it's like this photo, right? I mean, it's pretty OBVIOUS that this is a photo of kids, and the other main element added in here is fake. I mean, ANYONE can see it! Right? ;->
True, but in the respect of PS adding of elements like extra
animals or something obviously fake. Just keep it as real as
possible since they don't want "fake" photos.

Kimberly -

The key to the quandry is this:
What does the rule state?
And can you work within the boundaries of this rule with a digitcal camera?

You spoke with a person on the phone. I believe you identified this "guy" as a "marketing/public relations person". It's not clear that this is a judge, someone who helped define and write the rules, or if it is just someone who wants to keep his job in case he's wrong about what he told you on the phone.

Either way, it seems to me that the path is open before you to do what YOU decide to do here. And I'm sure whatever decision you make, the rest of the STF will respect you for it and support you either way.
On the other hand, given the fact that I only want to use it as a
measuring stick, why not enter, simply for my own personal reasons.

Before you win the contest (think positive) you should get a 35mm slide made of your picture. I'd also recommend shooting in 3:2 mode, or at least cropping for the 5x7.

When they ask for the film, hand them the slide. If they ask what camera you used, tell them the truth. The contest says "any camera" it doesn't specify. It says "no digital photos." This could mean "don't e-mail us a photo, we'd prefer to have it on Konica paper."

You have nothing to hide. "Entries may be taken with any brand camera" is pretty open. Also you'd be submitting a printed 5x7, not a "digital photo."

I'd enter the contest in a heartbeat. If they accused me of taking photos with a digital camera, I'd tell them I did it, and I'm proud of it!

The people I really feel sorry for are the Polaroid owners. "Any brand camera" includes Polaroid, but in bold and underlinded it says "All entries must be 5x7." How can you do that with a Polaroid?
Lets say you win.

First place photos will be featured in Sun Newspapers and wkyc.com.
All winners' names will be entered into a drawing for a live
Morning News or Weekend 9 a.m. News interview with a Channel 3 News
personality and have their photo shown on the air.

http://www.wkyc.com/sites/zoo/

What will you do when they ask you for all the info on your camera.
Type camera, film and speed used and settings etc. "Live on the air"
and had to show your camera?

Just curious and concerned!

Good luck,

You could say:

"Hi there, all of you out there in TV-land!!! No, I'm not a "real" photographer, but I pretend to be one while using my beautiful digital camera. That's right, this one right here!"

Bahahahahahahahahahahah!!©

The truth is always funnier than the lie. :-))

There's a pretty sound line of argument in these sort of contests that the zoo (in this case) is USING the entrants (amateur photgraphers) to gain ownership at little cost of a wide range of photos some of which the zoo intends to USE for their own publicity purposes

If your intentions are to use your submissions as a measuring stick then, I say go ahead and USE their contest for YOUR purposes - seems like a fair deal to me

If you get lucky and win (I hope you do) then stick it to them about their stupid rules whilst making a dignified exit.

"I would like to thank Phil and all those on STF for making this possible..." Heehee, wouldn't that be a great plug.

For background see here:
http://www.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1009&message=3089690

The guy from the zoo called me back this morning. Here's how it
went(irrelevant parts cut out):

Me: "What do you mean by digital photos?"
Him: "Photos taken with a digital camera. Do you have a digital
camera?"
Me: "I have both. Why can't aren't digital cameras allowed?"
Him: "Because people can alter the photo and we want regular photos."
Me: "Are you aware that you can do the same thing with a film camera?"
Him: "Yes." (This surprised me, I didn't think he would know.)
Me: "And that's acceptable? I can use a film camera and alter the
photo?"
Him: "Well, what we're looking for is just regular photos."
Me: "So only film cameras are allowed?"
Him: "Yes."

Now, I didn't want to get into it with him about what a "regular"
photo is, rules is rules, I suppose. I find it amazing that they
are aware that you can do the same alterations with film, but won't
accept digital.

Hi Kimberly,

Below is a link to photo contest rules for a contest to be held by the State of Maine. Not that it will help with the Zoo, but perhaps having a copy of some clear and concise rules regarding digital images will help you in the future.

Good luck,

Now, that is a forward thinking set of judges. A contest that admits all and excludes no one unfairly. They are even very clear about the type of editing that will be permitted, and what they do not want to see. Not ridiculously exhaustive, but concise and clear for folks who do this kind of stuff even casually. They even use common proper terminology.

Hey,

What can I say, my tax dollars at work!

Maybe we could all enter in Maine, but with what? The rules state that digital photo resolution must not be greater than 600 x 450 pixels. On most of our photo printers, a clear image would be less than one inch square.

Maybe that WOULD be art!

P.S. - Just got back from the DuPage County Fair and there were no rules against any digital photo entries. Thinking about it next year. But get this... $7 to enter, $5 prize (plus ribbon) for 1st place. Am I missing something here?
