This forum has been an invaluable resource for me in getting started in photography. I purchased a d80, my first slr (film or digital), about a month ago. I picked the d80 largely based on things I read here, and couldn't be happier with it.

Once I decided on the camera, the immense learning curve would have been even more daunting without all the tips I was able to pick up from the forum. I have been shooting in RAW and manual exposure from the start because of what I read here, and I think I'm learning much faster and will surely eventually be a much better photographer because of it. This is not to mention all the small things that make everything easier/better. I've also read a couple books, including Understanding Exposure, which have been greatly helpful, on the advice of posters.

Anyway, I wanted to post a first set of pictures for C&C. As I said, I am truly a beginner and I know the photos contain many mistakes (some of which I've already noticed), so any advice is much appreciated.

These are all shot in RAW with the 18-55VR, converted in NX2 with fairly minimal PP, generally a bit of exposure compensation and contrast.

Thanks!

First a few landscapes, which I think is going to be generally where my interest lies.

Of course I had to include the obligatory dog shots. He is my most willing model.

The landscapes will not appeal to everyone, they're too understated for that. I like 'm, I like simple landscapes but I do think you need to keep working on getting a focal point in it.

The dog shots I find disappointing, looks like you got tool close with a wideangle and the light isn't very good.

Thanks for the comments. Lighting on the indoor shots is something I am having a tough time with. I plan to get the sb400 or sb600 so that should help.

As for the landscapes, I am really trying to work on getting the exposure down right now, as its been a bit tough to find compelling subects in the typical gray Chicago winter.

Congrats on the cam. Nice pics and you look like you are mastering things ok. I have the d80 and love it. Graeme in oz

I've always loved taking pictures. Other interests incl motor bike...suzuki C90 cruiser, pushbike riding (just to keep fit after retiring),make things such as kitchens, picture frames, wood turning and other things out of timber (my forte when teaching).

Had a look at your exif, start learning about the differences between
matrix, center and spot metering. You're ready for that and it will
allow even more flexibility in your shots.

Thanks for taking the time to look at the exif. You're right, I haven't ventured off matrix yet, I will definitely do that.
