smug mug

I don't use SmugMug currently, but my understanding is that Flickr is more for sharing your photos with a community, while SmugMug is more for setting up an online gallery and/or mass storing your photos in a safe location.

So they both are useful but in different ways.

Based on this thread, I signed up for a trial on SmugMug. Trying to upload my first 12 images it is taking sooooo long.

Where do I contact someone? I too am using Firefox, but I am uploading directly from my Photoshop Elements 7 program... part of the reason I wanted to try this was because the upload is build right into the orgainzer so it seems like it would make it simpler.
I have been using SmugMug for a number of years and it seems that it
just keeps getting better. I switched to SmugMug from one of the free
hosting sites and it was one of my better decisions.

I have only had a couple of issues over the years and in each case
after contacting SmugMug I received a reply within minutes and my
problem was quickly resolved -- the customer service is outstanding!

Example, I was having a problem uploading files (slow uploading) to
SmugMug while testing a Beta copy of Firefox and I made a comment on
here to that affect and I quickly heard from SmugMug. One of their
system people gave me instruction on what to do to get Firefox
running the way it should on XP, or more to the point, what to do to
XP.

when I was considering Smugmug if anyone ordered from you they became customers of Smugmug. In that you never received information on the customer so you could contact them for satisfaction, special deals and son on. The photos came from Smugmug not you; I'm not sure your name was even mentioned on the credit card billing.

there were many comments to this effect on the Pro forum and a number threatened to leave or left Smugmug in spite of their excellent work.

Their comments were enough to scare me away, not that I do a lot of work mail order but I do like to keep the few customers I have and not give them to a company I hired to work for me especially when the same excellent work can be gotten for less and from a company who will not steal my customers.

it is possible they have changed this policy in the past 2½ years so check on it.

BTW If you do not intend to sell photos either site is excellent. Smugmug still has more display options and Exposuremanager.com has lower prices for equal quality from what I've seen.

Ray, it sounds as if there have been some changes in the past 2+ years. I have a SM Pro account and receive notification any time an order is placed, with all of the customer's information including email address. Of course, they DON'T provide me with the credit card info.

Shipping is still done from SM (actually EZPrints) but from my position, that just means I don't have to be involved in handling it. I guess its a matter of how much you want to control the transaction. Personally, I tell the customer up front that the site handles all of the billing, printing, and shipping and I haven't had anyone yet who was concerned about that. I just sell it as "this way I can concentrate on photos and let them concentrate on printing and shipping".

Obviously, at some level I suppose SM has "hijacked" my customer, because they initiate communications with them, but to me that also serves as positive customer service. I've even had customers tell me "I got an email from them thanking me for ordering and telling me when my order should ship", so I think the SM communications actually strengthens the customer relationship. The only "threat" I would see from SM is that my customer may start using them to host/print their own pictures, but I wouldn't have any piece of that anyway.

You may want to take another look at them when you have an opportunity.

Sounds like a major improvement! Thank you for the updated information.

I no longer have a problem with Smugmug as that was my only problem with them and I did not want any credit card info.

At the time they did not even include any information on where the photos came from and there were billing complaints but I did not go that far with them.

This again is an improvement as before there was NO communication with any customers except from, for, and by Smugmug; nothing was communicated from the photographer to the customer or from the customer to the photographer.
You may want to take another look at them when you have an opportunity.
