Tim,
If only I were sufficiently skilled to do a self guided trip! In fact, I'm not an expert kayaker and given how cold the water is, I went with the an adventure company called "Black Feather" which is based in Canada and specialized in Arctic paddling and hiking trips (their website is http://www.blackfeather.com ). They were truly excellent - the best adventure travel company I've had the pleasure of touring with. My personal preference is to travel on my own, of course, but for kayaking, I do need help.
The season for Sea kayaking in Greenland is the summer - I went in early July and I understand that the kayaking is good from July-early September. Its highly advisable to take a guide, although we did bump into these New Zealanders who were doing a 6 week expedition by themselves. The tour I went on was for 2 weeks, and for me, it was the perfect amount of time.
Hope that helps! If you have any other questions, ask away!
Best,
Brian
