I have a Canon 300D and have just recently decided to experiment with RAW images. I have the software that came with the camera but for some reason the camera and software are not talking. I have uninstalled/installed the programme a few times with no success.

Any thoughts would be appreciated

You should install the latest update of ZoomBrowser, available from any Canon website. In order to install an update, you will need to have a version already installed on your computer, the one on the CD should do nicely.

Downloading via a cable connection between the camera and PC is OK, but a card reader is much faster.

Unlike some cameras, Canon's DSLRs can't be set up as a "mass storage device" so they're not recognised as external drives when plugged into a computer, and you have to use special software to download JPG files and RAWs.

The best, and easiet, solution is to get yourself a card reader - put the memory card in this and you'll be able to use ordinary programs like the Windows Explorer to transfer all your JPGs and RAWs to your computer.

Alternatively, on the software disk that came with the camera, you should find what you need - "EOS Utility" - of which Canon say:

"EOS Utility - Simplifies image transfers from your EOS digital SLR to a computer. It integrates with Digital Photo Professional and ZoomBrowser/ImageBrowser for a fast and seamless workflow. EOS Utility also allows you to remotely operate the camera from your computer using the supplied interface cable."

Try that!

Are you running Vista? I had been having an issue connecting to a 350D with Vista (for remote shooting). I finally figured out that it seems necessary to run as administrator and then all works fine. However, as others have said, I, and many others, use a separate card reader for download, which works fine for raw.

Use the "EOS Utility" and you should be fine!

Thanks everyone.

I finally got my laptop to recognise the camera. I have been on the phone with Canon today. They informed me that Vista doesn't recognise Twain driver because it uses it's own (or something like that)- so I am unable to use EOS utilities. They suggested downloading Digital Photo Professional from their site, which I did. So I'm just copying my files over and will see what I can do with this programme.

The card reader seems like the way to go I'll look into it.

This is such a great forum with so many helpful tips and suggestions. Keep it up everyone because I have learnt a lot just by reading your comments and suggestions.
