Another Angel

keep up the great portraits,

just read about your bazooka studio model lens.

I like this photo. It has a good composition, nice lighting and a gorgeous model which are all the ingredients you need for a successful portrait.
Well done John.

One small remark though. The picture has a noticeable yellow cast which is probably doe to an uncalibrated screen. Screen calibration is an important key to get accurate colors. The best is to use a hardware device but they are expensive. Alternatively, you can find a software on the web, some are free that will give you very acceptable results.

Nice shot John, you are getting good use of the new camera.

The whites of the eye do show a little yellow bias, at least from the numbers, but not by much and we do have to remember that you are in a different country taking shots of a different race of people.

I like this a lot, it has a presence to it.

I'm not sure about Moti's comment on the colour cast. My monitor is calibrated too, and it may be slightly too red rather than yellow. However, it looks quite okay to me. Perhaps my calibration is out, but I have hardware calibration and two monitors side-by-side.

Colours are a big issue, because we all see colours differently. This is an interesting experiment:

If you want to use software to calibrate, it's a good idea to purchase a colour checker such as the Gretag Macbeth colour card. You then take shots of the card, and adjust the monitor with the card next to the monitor, and try to match the tones as best as possible.

I did the test because I couldn't remember what I got last time, but this time I aced it - it says I have perfect colour vision!

I didn't get that score last time, but perhaps this means that my calibration is spot on - I have a new computer since I last did the test.

I usually don't trust only my eyes when it comes to evaluate color cast because in many cases, you might have more than one color shifting which makes it almost impossible to analyze by the eye.

A quick way to do it is to use the info tool in photoshop on a neutral portion in the photo, in this case, the only usable area was the eye white. It is not always very accurate but at least can give a rough idea of the situation and a starting point to help with the color correction.

But you are right too Mike. According to my measuring there is also a red cast but the shift for the yellow is much more dominant.

I wouldn't recommend using a Gretag Macbeth colour card for this purpose. You don't use such a card to make a visual comparison.

Also, a Gretag Macbeth colour card is very expensive, it costs about 65-70$. For a similar price, you can already get an entry level hardware calibration device such as Huey, which will do the job much more easily and accurate.
