This is the text of a thread I started in the Nikon forum that generated a lot of responses - tell me what you think..

"Given up waiting for Phil's review of the CP5700 and in the light of some reported problems with this camera, I decided to buy the Canon G2 with 1Mb microdrive and Speedlight 420EX external flashgun for the same money but I have 10 days "grace" period (during which I can change my mind). I wonder how many more people are hanging on for Phil's review before they make a decision. Someone mentioned Phil's unwell - I hope (if you're reading this Phil) you make a speedy recovery - we need you desperately."

In the same forum there's links directly to Imaging Resource's prototype reviews of that model as well as CP4500. Not sure how well the production models turn out, but I can tell you for the 4MP's: INCREDIBLE SHUTTER LAG.

Prefocus is about 0.55 seconds, G2 is less than 0.1 sec.

Full autofocus WA/TELE and manual focus take roughly the same amount of time as G2's full autofocus at TELE. The manual one was VERY slow; at least ours can manage at under 1 sec.

I had the same predicament as you 2 months ago as to whether to buy G2 or wait for CP5700. I ended buying G2. So far, I have not regretted this decision yet. I think feature wise, CP5700 defintely has more to offer. It has 5 MP, ISO800, higher shutter speed of 1/4000. However, with all the spec, how good it is in action, it's still not really proven yet. G2 has been proven to be good so far. So, if you are like me, can't wait to take pictures, G2 is still a good buy. With the extra cash for not buying CP5700, get yourself a 420EX flash. It's definitely a good combination. I can't say this from personal experience yet, but so many have said so here.

CCD noise at ISO 800 is BS compared to CMOS noise at ISO 800; the former is next to unusable.

I have bought the 420EX TWICE because it and my original G2 (silver) got stolen from my flat(UK) apartment(US) when thieves broke in..

The 2 biggest attractions of the CP5700 are the 8X zoom and the way it handles - I love the SLR feel without the SLR bulk and the EVF is good too - in almost every other respect the G2 is ahead IMHO.

Not sure where you are finding these numbers. Imaging-Resource has not yet completed the full (production) review of the 5700 and does not have any timing data for it. For the 4500, they show a prefocus lag time of 0.25 (slightly better than the average of 0.3 seconds).

I went to the camera shop last night with the intention of buying the 4mp/4X Nikon 4500. Still waiting for Phils review but figured with a 30 return policy I didn't need to wait. The camera sounded like every thing I was looking for, but after taking a second look I had my doubts. For one thing I found the menu's confussing(even the store owner struggled trying to figure it out), its very slow to focus and slower yet from shot to shot, with lots of lag. I kind of thought the swivel would be handy, but its just not. My biggest complaint was the quality of the images as displayed on the lcd, you look at it and its dark and out of focus looking. They do print out nice however, but I would probably delete the image before I got to the printer and try taking the shot over. I was unsure of my choice, when the store owner unwrapped a new Black G2. "SOLD" I'll take that one! So far I'm very happy with it, allthough I have this nagging feeling Canon will come out with a new longer focusing G3 and I'll regret my puchase, there due! Get well Phil!
