Took the D90 and 18-105 kit lens to our sons rehearsal.

Didn't know what to expect. Sat in middle row, bad lighting, fast moving targets.
Shot most at ISO 1600, wide open or close to it.
Here they are:

I was amazed at the results.

Very little post processing, all done in lightroom. All photos shot in Raw, most processing involved exposure, recovery, contrast.

There are a few videos in the gallery as well (at the end).

See what you think.

These are stunning shots. I wonder how my D80 would fare in this same condition. Did you use an external flash?

Thanks for sharing these pictures.

Those came out really nice. Speaks well for your talents, as well as a great camera. Posts like these make me want to give up my D70s and purchase the D90. Oh well..... maybe later this year.

Great shots and they speak to both your abilities as a photographer as well as the capabilities of the individual responsible for lighting the production. It's tough to do well. You should show these to the director and the lighting designer, they'd probably appreciate the opportunity to see this before the production goes live.

Be gentle. My life's a work in progress.

Super photos!!! Makes anyone want to go and buy a D90. In any case you are also very good and took some beautiful pics, wasn't only the camera ;)

You wont be disappointed. I recently shot a banquet and show with mine and while I had a fast zoom and a couple of fast primes I was really lucky with the results. I was able to get shots in lighting where my eyes were struggling to make out details.

At 1600 at normal print size the D90 works great and at 3200 you can still pass most images as long as they are exposed enough to work with.

Thanks.

My son is the lighting director for this show and I think the photos helped him see that his lighting design was in fact working (being close to something day in and day out sometimes makes you lose perspective on it).
The D90 is a joy to use. Looking forward to many more chances to use it.

Great work! I noticed you used some pretty slow shutter speeds. You must have a pretty steady hand even with VR.

Great pictures, and great composition as well. It shows you are a good photographer. What mode did you use shooting? Aperture priority? what Picture Control setting did you use? and did you tweak the default PC setting in anyway (e.g. sharpness, contrast, etc). Sorry I asked too many questions, since your pictures showed great colors that I like very much.

Great series. Very sharp, at 1/13-sec! Handheld or did you use a tripod?

I could not open the videos on my Vista software, anything I could do to get to see these?
Thanks.

Thanks.
I was shooting mostly in P mode and some Aperture priority.
My normal picture control is the normal one with slightly higher contrast.

Although, this doesn't make too much of a difference since I shoot in Raw and process in Lightroom, that means that the picture controls are mostly ignored (unless you process with Nikon software).

Thanks.

Right, that is surprising, I hadn't noticed how slow some of these exposures were. No tripod, I lent on my knee for some photos for stability.

You shouldn't need any particular software to watch the videos. Smugmug plays them using flash. So you just need to make sure your Flash plugin is up to date.

I've always loved taking pictures. Other interests incl motor bike...suzuki C90 cruiser, pushbike riding (just to keep fit after retiring),make things such as kitchens, picture frames, wood turning and other things out of timber (my forte when teaching).

Nice photo's indeed.
Excellent WB, composition and contrast.

Well, these were not taken with a D90 or D80, but rather an old D70. The lens was a 70-300 mm (no VR), available light (no flash), ISO 1000. My granddaughter had the lead in Oklahoma. She did an awesome job, but I think the pictures turned out nicely.
