I was bored today so I went up the road and shot at some Bucks. This one looked pretty good to me. Prints out good also. Hope you like it.

Pentax K20D, Sigma 500mm f4.5, at f8, 1/640s, ISO320, beanbag support.

Excellent Ron - I tell you what, you wouldn't want him to charge you with those antlers, do they ever charge?

Thanks Dean. I've never been close enough to one of these big guys to worry about it charging me. I guess if the conditions were right and one of them felt threatened then it might charge.

Cheers.

Great photos!!

That is a handsome animal. How did you decide on using the lens, bushhawk, tripod, beanbag ... and how are you carrying the lens? Yes, I'm taking your great shots for granted now, and I am more interested in how with that big lens.

Thank you
Russell

Sir Ron,

I think you have found your 500mm lens for life. That sucker is
SHARP!!!!!

Zoom? Don't need no stinking ZOOM! Primes-R-U!
Hi Lloyd,

Yep, "Primes-R-Me" kit. :-)

Today I fitted a kit to take with me when I go out shootin' and my brother was overwhelmed. I had the following fitted:
(1) - K20D + Sigma 500mm f4.5
(2) - K20D + Sigma APO 400mm f5.6 Tele-Macro
(3) - K10D + Pentax-FA*300mm f4
(4) - K10D + Sigma 180mm f3.5 Macro
(5) - K2000 + Pentax-FA 135mm f2.8
(6) - *istDS2 + Pentax-DFA 100mm f2.8 Macro

(7) - a small bag containing the seven limiteds (21, 31, 35, 40, 43, 70, and 77mm), a Pentax-A 16mm FE, a Pentax SMC 18mm f3.5, a Pentax-FA*24mm f2, a Pentax-A 28mm f2, a Pentax DFA 50mm f1.4, a Pentax-FA 50mm f2.8 Macro, and just in case my Pentax-F 1.7X AF Adapter. Then for focus trapping hummingbirds, my Pentax-A*200mm f2.8 and Pentax-A*300mm f4.

Yep, I am primed and ready to go. :-)

Now, all I need is a couple of K30D's when they come out and fit them with:
(1) - K30D + Pentax-FA*85mm f1.4
(2) - K30D + Pentax-A 50mm f1.2

Just kidding with all of the above of course......or....am I? Hehe. :-)

Cheers.

Hi Russell,

Right now I am just using a beanbag or just handhold it (not that heavy for me...really). I turned the tripod mount towards the top and use that to carry the lens. As I've said before, my lens carrier is my Jeep Wrangler X Unlimited and anything that is more than 100 feet from the road is not photogenic. Now I have to modify that to say, if I have to walk more than 100 feet then it is not photogenic. :-)

Serious though, when I go out to do some real shooting I will have my beanbag, monopod, tripod, gimbol mount, and maybe my Bushawk with me. So, I will use whatever it takes to get the shot.

Cheers.

Nice pose, Ron. You always get good lighting on your "subjects". Do
you consciously work at that?
Hi Steven,

In the case of these deer, and the Bighorn sheep when they come around, I know that in most cases they will not even be seen until about one hour before sunset. The mouth of the canyon where they are found is open to the setting sun until it goes down completely. Most of the time it is very good light unless it is overcast.

Cheers.
