Hello ppl,

I am a bit confused.
The S2 takes a wide range of Nikkor lenses and perhaps even other ones.

The brochure of the S2 tells me that only type-D and type-G lenses support all features of the S2, including 3D matrix metering. Another resource, the dutch fuji site, tells me that the type-D lens is the only one to support 3D matrix metering...no sign of type-G here.
So, my questions to the people on this forum:

What type of lenses enables me to use ALL of the S2's features? (nikkor and non-nikkor lenses)

What brand and line of lenses can be used on the S2 aside from the nikkor AF-D, AF-G,AF-S and the manual AI and AI-S ?

I must say that nikkor lenses are quite expensive, what are good alternatives ?

and last:
I have ordered 2 lenses with my S2:
AF Zoom-Nikkor 28-80mm f/3.3-5.6 G
AF Zoom-Nikkor 70-300mm f/4-5.6 G
Was this a good choice, or is it bad, verry bad !

Thanx,
Simon

While neither of these would be considered "pro" lenses, there have been some nice reviews on them in the Nikon SLR forum. Nikon mount lenses are the only ones that will work on the S2 as it is built on a Nikon body. The high end or "pro", if you will, lenses from Nikon would be the AFs series of glass, some zoom, some primes, most, but not all, would feature a constant 2.8 app., and some are in their second build, ie the 300/2.8 AFs II. The AFs refers to the use of internal motors, and focus much faster than their older non-afs counterparts. I'm sure there are other's in the "pro" quality that were made before the AFs line, but, unlike Canon which used the "L" indication, I don't think Nikon made that distinction, though, I only switched to Nikon three years ago, and don't know a lot about the older glass. Good shooting!

You might also want to check this web site, there used to be a lot direct feedback from average users other than the "specialists":

http://www.photographyreview.com/

I'm a little bit concerned with the statement Fuji made on their S2 brochure regarding the 17-35 and 28-70 AF-S since I'm almost all AF-S now. Until I get my hands on these cameras at my local dealer and test it myself, I won't make any decision.

you are not the first person to misread the brochure. All it says is that those lenses aren't compatible with TCs.

Simon,

All the G-type lenses and AF-S lenses have the D- designation. For example, following the aperture number in a AF-S lens, there is a D. For G-type lens, the D is omitted, but if you read brochure, you notice there is a D label.

D simply means "Distance information".

As having been mentioned by another one in this thread, people only misread the information in the manual about the compatibility of AF-S lens.

If the error originates from page 18, one may mistaken the AF-I teleconverter compatibility issue.

If the error originates from page 41, one may mistaken the vignetting problem for autofocusing.

Thanks, Ronan. I read both the manual and the brochure, and I think there's a confusion between the two. I don;t believe the incompatibility either, but I just need to convince myself :-)

Hi mike,
Thanx for the reply.

I thought i have read something about somebody using a sigma lens on the S2, i could be wrong...

Yes, the AF-s are considered pro lenses, and they have those wavemotors inside. Verry nice lenses, but verry expensive too !

Yes, i have considered that, but at € 699.00 the Nikkor D AF 3.5-4.5 18-35 mm IF-ED exeeds my budget for the moment :(

I think your selections are excellent. I would add the Nikor 18-35
for more coverage at the wide angle end of the shooting spectrum

If price is a consideration, I would take a look at the Tokina 19-35 lens. It is a suprisingly good lens for under $200.

I 'm using a just purchased Sigma 15-30, all functions are 100%.
What I have seen on my monitor so far looks good, but at 15mm lens flare
has to be watched carefully.
I'm testing it for sharpness against my Nikkor 35-105 this afternoon.

I was confused about the lenses also and I was told to go to these sites to learn something about the nikon lenses. One of the sites, nikortek.htm goes over all the different letter designations on the nikon lenses. About the G lenses in particular, it calls them (sorry) 'cheap plastic lenses'. They have no manual focus ring and can only be used in an autofocus camera. BTW at BH photo ad I see the 70-300 G for 129 and the D with ED glass (supposed to be pretty good lens) for only 239. Seems to me if you're going to spend 2300 on a body you'd want to get a better lens than the G lens series.

That's what I've gotten from reading here and reading the reviews, not from personal knowledge :-(

both of your lenses are shown, grade they have is on 0 to 5 rating.

it's also very good. ( I don't know how accurate these ratings are, but they somewhat correspond to the photodo.com)

Hello ppl,

I am a bit confused.
The S2 takes a wide range of Nikkor lenses and perhaps even other

The brochure of the S2 tells me that only type-D and type-G lenses
support all features of the S2, including 3D matrix metering.
Another resource, the dutch fuji site, tells me that the type-D
lens is the only one to support 3D matrix metering...no sign of
type-G here.
So, my questions to the people on this forum:

What type of lenses enables me to use ALL of the S2's features?
(nikkor and non-nikkor lenses)

What brand and line of lenses can be used on the S2 aside from the
nikkor AF-D, AF-G,AF-S and the manual AI and AI-S ?

I must say that nikkor lenses are quite expensive, what are good
alternatives ?

and last:
I have ordered 2 lenses with my S2:
AF Zoom-Nikkor 28-80mm f/3.3-5.6 G
AF Zoom-Nikkor 70-300mm f/4-5.6 G
Was this a good choice, or is it bad, verry bad !

Thanx,
Simon

Well I am still waiting for my S2 maybe in a week....sigh. But I purchased the Nikkor 50mm1.8 AF from B and H for around 100 bucks. Last nite I purchased the sigma 15-30 wide angle on ebay brand new for 425. I have seen some pics on this site using that lens so I am excited about getting it. I have an old Tamron autofocus 28-200 that has some slop in it that I will use for telephoto to see how the camera works with it before I replace it with probably some sigma lenses.

One thing I have noticed on the nikonite forum is the intense snobbery over non nikon lenses which to me doesn't make a lot of sense. I would not hesitate to get a non nikon lens just cuz the name is on it. I am more interested in the quality of my photos than brand identification.

Hmm, so it IS possible to get other brand lanses than nikkor for this camera ?
Is there some resource on that ???

I think your selections are excellent. I would add the Nikor 18-35

Simon,

Two excellent lenses in your choice.

Agree with comments that suggest you might consider something
wider, but why not consider a prime lens ( no zoom ) of say, 14mm,
18mm or 20mm to complete your line-up. The image quality is
higher with non-zoom lenses, they are lighter, less bulky and will
still cover a good focussing range, just not as versatile as zooms.

If price is a consideration, check out Adorama.com which has a very
easy lens menu system. Punch in Sigma or Tamron for wide-angle lens
needed for Nikon-mount ( the S2 ) and read on :-) The lens menu
will tell you about compatibility, etc.

Good Luck,
Keith

Yes, it is possible to use a non-Nikon brand lens. What's important is the mount. Sigma, Tamron, Tokina, and others will make a lens, then add mounts to the end for the various cameras. So the same type of lens will be optically identical, but have a different mount on the lens to match various camera makes.

When you go into a store to ask about lenses, just tell them you have a Nikon AF-mount, and you would like to look at lenses that are AF-D and AF-S compatible. There are lenses by Sigma, Tamron, Tokina, Nikon, Cosina/Phoenix/Vivitar, and others which have a Nikon AF mount on them.

Nikon lenses are expensive, but are generally well-made. You can get a non-Nikon brand which will give you great results, but the lens itself may not be finished as nicely or as well-made. Sometimes, though, you're just paying for the Nikon name and not getting anything more for it. It helps to read the boards here to see what people like to use.

I myself have lenses of all makes. Off the top of my head, here's what I have:

Sigma 28-105 f/2.8-4 (My current all-around on the camera all the time lens)

Tamron 28-200 (Did okay with this lens, but the viewfinder was dark).

Sigma 50-500 zoom (now this is an amazing lens. Heavy, but gives surprisingly sharp results)

Sigma 20mm f/1.8 (hey, you gotta have something to do wide angle shots)

Nikon 80-200 f/2.8 AF-D lens. (A great lens that I don't use much)

And Nikon 50mm f/1.8 lens (A "must-have" lens known for its sharpness)

Hi Simon,

Just have a look at the Tamron 24-135mm 3.5-5.6 SP IF AF lens, not realy cheap, from the dutch distributor Euro 535, but after my search on Internet it's OK. And yesterday I bought a german photomagazine in which it realy get very high figures and that for being tested as a 35mm film lens.

It will cover everything from 36 to slightly above 200 mm equivelant, not problems with vignetting as we only use the center, my suggestion is, try to change the two lenses you ordered to be replaced with the one I mention.

It's bit of strange no shops in the Eindhoven region do have this lens in their program, for me a sign it's too fine and would be a tread to the well know brands like Nikon and others. And I know the price isn't a cheap, but well you know me, and I won't stand on one nights ice,

BTW would be nice to meet once again and to discuss photography,

jacques.
