I know there was a thread like this with the S1...now that some of us have had the S2 for a few days or so what have you found to be your favorite settings and what kind of photography do you use the S2 for? Why do you like the settings you have chosen?

I think this thread will be helpful to those of us testing the camera.

I have only had my S2 for a few days time and so far I like "Standard" across the board with hard sharpening on. I am still testing though. I am a portrait/wedding photographer.

Looking forward to hearing your replies!!!

org, org, standard (sharpening)..but I haven't tested "hard" sharpening as has been suggested by many.

org color and tone definitely make a big difference if you are having the photos professionally processed. Otherwise I find they come out favoring the red.

They will look a bit undersaturated on you screen but most processors make the adjustments before printing.

If I use tiff or jpeg, tham even org. org is for me far oversaturated.

I really have to take away the colour in the hue/saturation tool in Photoshop of around -20!! Standard colour is just really absurd!!

RAW looks better but I am not able or skilled enough to get the same sharp images with raw compoared with tiff using sharpening in the camera and Unsharp mask in Photoshop.
Maybe someone else can help?

Udo (btw: I own the S2)

Hi Thomas,

I have my S2 now for about a week and I'm still experimenting, it's a lot more difficult to find what I want then on the S1. For the moment I'm using STD/STD/STD, White balance on auto (this is an incredibily good functioning white balance) and the colors look very natural on my 21 inch Colorsync Mac Screen (using profiles made by an Heidelberg specialist). My only concern is to have sharp images, most images turn out to soft for my taste. The colors of the S2 are much more realistic but I preferred the a bit warmer S1 colors but then can be changed in PS. I'm using my pictures for Offset printing and always convert them to CMYK, and if they have to stay in RGB for printing it could be something different.

With very kind regards,

Dirk

Thomas,

ORG,ORG,STD for people pictures - gives great flesh tones, when you do color=STD for people pics, most reds become orange especially in the lips and the flesh become a little more magenta.

STD,STD,STD for landscape - most people shot landscapes with slide film because they like to see the colors pop. I was at a camera club with my S2 recently and most people there don't like digital because they think the colors are flat. To me it the colors are natural! Have you ever seen people take pictures with slide film? Those colors are way too saturated and are not what your eyes are seeing. So with the STD on color and tone it makes the colors in the landscape POP like slide.

ORG,STD,STD for closeup macro - for flowers and insects the tone at STD does a nice job.

STD on Sharpness is just about right, it is not too soft and not too sharp, and if it isn't sharp enough for you there is always USM in PS.

So far, I like:

ORG, ORG, HARD

My experience is so good at this setting that literally, I can take the images, stick the memory card into a computer and print beautiful shots on a Canon S9000 straight. No post processing--no unsharp masking, no color adjustments, nada. Just open the images in Photoshop (in Adobe RGB color), and print. Or if I want 4 x 6" prints, I select them right off the microdrive in qimage pro and print straight through, with no post processing. I find the images to be incredibly sharp with accurate color, although I now find myself looking at the reds a lot thanks to the "orangey-red" posts I've seen here. But the reds look right to me.

Jim,

Did you ever try to custom white balance for portraits or any application?

Do it with a Kodak gray card and see the difference. Right on! ( it works with my S1 and I'm sure that it will be the same soon wiith my S2)

Anthony,

What lenses are you using? Can you recommend a good lens that makes sharp images wide open?

So far I've tried 28-105 Nikkor 1:3.5-4.5 D and at 3.5,4.5.6, (may be even 8) it doesn't seem to bring out the little detail. not even if my shutter speed is 500.

I like my Sigma 28-105 f/2.8-4, and it seems to work fine for me at 4.8 and 5.6 and smaller with the S2. I haven't had to shoot it wide open with the S1pro because of the higher ISO, but I'm looking forward to trying it out with the S2 at maximum aperture now that I have ISO 100 option.

I am not a pro and I don't have a lot of lenses and I do have a very small budget for my hobby (which seems to go mostly towards ink and paper these days!). I am sure many of the other people here, like Jim, who are pros can weigh in with more accurate observations than I on which lenses are best.

I have heard over and over again that the Nikon 80-200 f/2.8 lens is supposed to be awesome even wide open. The funny thing is, I have that lens and I never seem to find an opportunity to use it. Because of the versatility of the Sigma, the 80-200 tends to be sitting and waiting. I'm hoping to find a low-light night baseball game to check out my S2 with the 80-200 lens. The focal lens of the lens may not suit your needs though.

Oh, I print at various sizes, usually 4 x 6 or 7.1 x 10.7, full frame at the 2:3 ratio.

However, since I got a Canon S9000 to go along with the S2, I have simply been stunned by 1) the speed of the S9000. It will do an 8.5 x 11 sized print in 2 minutes and a 13 x 19" print in 4 minutes; 2) the amazing out of the camera quality of the S2 with the Canon S9000. With the S1pro, I used to tweak white balance and do an unsharp mask. I haven't had to do this with the S2 yet; 3) print quality at 6 megapixels. The S2 does so well at 6 megapixels, that I haven't felt a need to use the higher resolution yet.

For printing, I use either Photoshop or Qimage. Qimage is a great program and well worth its modest price. It will even convert RAW files via Fuji's software.

And I love my Epson printers, so for me to like the Canon more, it borders on sacriledge. I feel so dirty. LOL
